try using divx to dvd. This program from vso is relatively quicker in the encoding phase than other applications. It will do divx/avi/xvid/mpeg1 and mpeg2 to a dvd movie file.
Depending on your pc stats wil depend on the time it takes.I am running an AMD 2600+ and i can get an AVI of roughly 700meg converted in about an hour.Once converted its rather easy to use Nero recode or TMPGEnc dvd author to get my project to disc

I suggest you go to this site http://www.vso-software.fr/
download only the free conversion tool.. run your AVIs' through it and convert them to DVD
By default this program will create a dvxtodvd folder in your My Document folder.
Access your now converted files, with DVDShrink in re-author mode, make sure they're in the right order, and burn with a Shrink/Nero combination.
[edit] if it's only one AVI file access with Shrink in normal mode.
Use the no compression option, and burn.
interactive guide for shrink http://www.dvdshrink.info/index.php
It's free this way :)
happy burning

all i can think of is WinAvi converter, which for me converts AVI's in between 20 to 40mins, though you are probably better off with the other guys' suggestions

dont know if with these stats that you will get the same 30 to 40 mins, with winavi,You may want to consider upping the ram to 1024 and getting a faster processor as well

Try googling a program called DVD Santa... I have used it several times to convert divx AVI to the good old VOB files that you need. The quality is very good though it may take some time on your machine.
