Yes.
Since 95% of ps2 games are DVD format.

Blue bottom originals are cd format,
Silver bottomed originals are dvd format.

You also need a modchip or bootdiscs installed to play backups.
Backups WONT play on a STOCK ps2.

SO you will probably need more than just the burner.
