what does it mean in virtualDub that it has detected a "VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file" and how do you "decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and and recompress the file with a constant bitrate encoder." I usually just ignore this message but it seems to me that when i have made the final mpg to be burnt as a vcd the audio and video dont match up...thank you to anyone who is willing to help me as a noob:)

Hi Clive,
Instead of using VirtualDub or VDubMod, try Nandub - it works with AC3 and VBR MP3 audio.
Nandub won't, however, help you to make MPG or VCD...

Hi!

Sorry for my poor English.

Step 1:
Download and run "NanDub" (it´s a variation of VirtualDub)

File > Open video file > Save WAV

Step 2:
Download and install "dBpowerAMP Music Converter"

Right-click on the WAV file you saved: Convert to > (choose "Wave") > Convert

Step 3: (if you will create a VCD or SVCD)
Download and run "TMPGEnc"

Video File (Browse) - select the AVI file

Audio File (Browse) - select the WAV file you have converted

In my opinion that process works perfectly.

Hugs from Brasil,

Maciel

The help given is very close to what I need. I want to cut a few minutes from an .AVI file but I don't want to end up with a VCD or SVCD. When I crop the .AVI using VirtualDub the audio is out of time. If I save a .wav using Nandub, how do I get this back into the AVI? At what stage do I crop the .AVI? Thanks!

Try to cut your .AVI file using the freeware called "Avi Chop 0.2".

You can download it at:

I hope it helps.

Nandub will work with your AC3 or VBR MP3 audio!
What this means is, you do not need to extract audio to WAV.
You can simply trim your AVI (as it is) using Nandub.
If it is out of synch, you can re-synch it, using Nandub.
To retain quality you must avoid any unneccessary decoding/transcoding/recoding. Just fix your AVI :^)
Open it in Nandub, adjust/trim or whatever, and save it as a new file. Set Nandub 'direct copy' both audio and video!
If file is out of synch, adjust audio to begin earlier or later relative to the video. This adjustment is in milliseconds (ms).
Be aware that 1000ms = 1 second.
Sometimes re-timing takes 2 or 3 attempts (trial & error) but it's easy, 2 minutes maximum to save the new 'fixed' file each time.
So, you can fix any out-of-synch AVI easily within 15 minutes or whatever...

ok i downloaded nandub, and the problem with virtual dub not even opening the file up is gone, but now if the file is in vbr, the audio cuts off when i load the video and try to preview it. Can somebody give me directions on how I am supposed to convert vbr to cbr, because i want to burn the vid on a DVD-R so that there is no delay in the audio stream .
