right now my DMA is off on my DVD-ROM drive and its on for the combo drive taht i burn with. i usually use two drives because it automates everything and i dont have to put the disk in after encoding. Im having trouble turning the dma on for both drives and i wanted to know if there is an easy way to do this or if its even possible. also does dma affect burning or just reading, if its just reading it will be just as easy to switch which drive uses dma. thanks!

DMA affects all aspects as it has diretc access to the memory.

If you are are reading or writing at high speeds then the fastest way to process data is to utilise the memory.

Usually uninstalling the drive and rebooting and windows reinstalls it restores it from PIO to DMA, however should that fail do the following:

Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Hardware
Click Device Manager
Click on IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

You should see IDE controllers for Primary and Secondary, just uninstall the relative one and reboot.
Windows should reinstall the IDE controller and revert your device back to the DMA level it is setup for.................

Usually a device will go into PIO mode if windows has encountered read/crc errors usualy about 6 times................

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............
Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down
