hi...can anyone tell me what is the likely cause of the LG dvd rom GDR-8162B shutting down my pc after inserting disk??? Is it time for a new one???? Thanx in advance..
I will recommend you to check your computer for viruses and spyware, I dont think it is a hardware problem, most of this trouble is caused by viruses spyware, so make sure your computer is free of it ;)
Hi Paztelu, thanx for your reply and suggestion...I've scanned my computer for viruses and spyware all came up clean. I've uninstalled a heap of programmes and just generally cleaned up. I also uninstalled sp2, cause of other probs I was having since installing it, and now when I insert disk into dvd-rom it doesn't shut my computer down,(its green light comes up for 'bout 2 sec's, them starts making this awful sound for 'bout 30 sec's) it just totally freezes the computer!! The only way out is restarting it......Any suggestions?????
I had that problem (Lite-On ROM freeze or crash) trying to backup several movies about a month ago. turns out that the current AnyDVD v.5.1.1.1 was the problem for me. Solved it by upgrading AnyDVD to beta v.5.1.2.1 which you can get from the cdFreaks forum.
Well If the Drive is making weird sounds, that may a sign that drive is defective or is having hardware problems, about the computer freezing etc, I will recommend you to open the computer case (remember to discharge static electricity before doing so) if you have your DVD-ROM drive instructions at hand, now with your computer opened check on the back of your DVD-ROM drive search for the jumper setting which may look like this: compare this with the drive instructions to check if the jumper is in the correct place and if is master or slave, If you have another drive also check if is master of slave or cable set, after making sure the jumper setting is correct check there arent any loose cables etc, also if possible try using another IDE cable.
I still think your having a Hardware problem due to the fact that the Drive makes strange for about 30 sec, if you still under warranty, you should return the drive and get a new one.
PS: Does the drive heats a lot when making this afwul sounds?
Hey there.........Thanks heaps for your advice Paztelu and Whisperer...sorry for not getting back to you earlier.....I did as you suggested Paztelu, took the cover off the computer,(pretty dusty in there)gave it a gentle clean..and unplugged/replugged cables from dvd-rom etc, and also took out my ram and reinserted it etc....put it all back and started it up....put disc into dvd-rom and woila! (it doesn't make such a racket now and it doesn't seem to heat up either)So at the moment(touch wood)it all seems ok, I can play movies and games again....I also reinstalled xp (thru my dvd-rom, yippee!), cause of other probs, and I'm still working on that......Thanx again..muchly appreciated!
Cheers
