no title after recording to dvd-r

this has happened several times. i time record nascar from tv , dvd recorder shows recording is taking place. after recording is over when i go to finalize dvd, message shows there is no title. disk shows data was indeed recorded, but no title. what happens? how can i prevent this in the future. can a title be put in?
