Hi,

Recently my NEC DVD+RW is refusing to copy my DVDs (A problem that has come out of thin air). It will burn and copy CDs fine, and even burn DVDs that I have created on my PC. It just won't let me make exact copies of them.
I use Nero Express, and Sonic RecordNow. They both encounter errors.
Nero's error log looks like this:

- don't know enough about this error apart from the obvious 'CD type reading failed' - sounds like it has a problem with that media

So you think the problem is with the brand/quality of the blank dvds im using? They were cheap, and bought in bulk, so maybe thats it. I'll try some better quality discs.

ETA:
I just tried to copy a dvd that was on a sony disc, and had the same problem. The error log looks like this:

- OMG! that is as old as the hills, you should upgrade to 6.6.0.14

- you're not trying to use DVD-R media by any chance are you ?, as the 2100A doesn't support -R discs (what i don't know is what a 2100AD is as opposed to a 2100A by the way). Either way, i think you can burn up to 8x with +R discs with this drive as it stands, and the only way i believe you can use -R discs is to 'crossflash' this drive to become a 2500A or even a 2510A. Some info here - http://herrie.org/upgrdr.html. However updating firmware is something to be done carefully as you could make your drive unusable if you lose power during the update, for instance. As to 'crossflashing', that can void your warranty, so if you had a warranty, and the drive broke in the future, you'd probably be told you weren't covered as in effect this drive would be a completely different drive now.

Physical memory : 509MB (522224kB)
Free physical memory: 58MB (59480kB)
Memory in use : 88 %
- close more background processes/applications down during the burn. 512MB is fine, but something's using too much of that. You're close to using virtual memory (a portion of hard disc) so then your hard disc will start 'swapping' and is obviously bad for burning if your hard disc is thrashing as well

hope i'm not overexplaining any of that by the way, i don't mean to offend if you know any of this already

Let's also try to establish exactly what media you're using; download dvdinfopro (free) and run one or more of the troublesome discs thru a media info check....

you're welcome.
Thought that media code rang a bell - here's the first one i came across, have a skim thru for a laugh - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/176790

I'd personally go with some top quality Verbatim datalifeplus 8x +R discs (they should have a media code of MCC003).

Here's some more info re MCC003 and i'm gonna assume you're in the US so there's good info in there about what stores/sites to irder them from - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/201551

Of course if you do consider the 'crossflashing' of firmware you will give yourself a bit more choice in media (-R for one thing), but the main thing is your drive as it stands allows the use of 8x media so it's not like you drive is too old and 8x will be around for quite a while yet.

So its crappy media? Is it normal to be able to burn to them, watch them on DVD players, but not be able to make exact copies?

Im actually in Australia, but have seen verbatim datalifeplus in stores here. I'll go grab some tomorrow and see how it goes. Is there any way of knowing the media code when purchasing? because they don't seem to be shown on the boxes/cases.

Also - are the movies I have burned onto the crappy media, lost forever? meaning, will I ever be able to make copies of them?

thanks

i'll just have a look for product codes, but (so far touch wood) no-one fakes Verbatim disks so you'll get genuine Verbatim. All you need to verify is which type of Verbatim, which is where the product codes come in . I've got a fairly up to date list somewhere, i'll have a look.

Crappy media is too inconsistent, it's just too hit and miss. By far the most posts i come across each day are due to bad media. Lots of these posts have slight setup issues such as yours, but fixing all those things and still using cheapy media is a false economy.

You can persevere copying from your copies obviously, by far the simplest way (to copy a copy) is to copy/paste the video_ts folder (in windows explorer) to your hard drive, then use Nero to do a 'dvd-video'. I can never explain this easily so look here - http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=8...

try this - http://www.verbatim.com.au/products/dvd_r2.cfm - if you hover over the 'more' icon on any of the disc choices, you get a product code. I personally would go by the 25 or more tubs, then note the product code, then you can look for that online, or in store.
datalifeplus are all i use and recommend

Hope that helps

I bought a few verbatim datalifeplus 8x dvd+r discs today - have yet to try them out.

Anyway, before I was trying to rip the crappy media discs using SmartRipper and dvd dycrypter, yet both froze during the ripping.
I then tried to rip another disk which I believe to be better quality media (Its a TDK DVD+R that I have sucessfully copied in the past) however it had the same problem as the other disks.
I was going to paste the media info of the TDK disc, but dvdinfopro says "your Drive does not support the commands required to read MID codes on this media"
and continues to give this:
Quote:
Media Information
Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Manufacturer ID cannot be read

Format Capacity Blank Disc
Free Blocks 132481024
Free Capacity 0.12GB(0.13GB)
Book Type Unknown
Media Type DVD+R
Manufacturer Rated Speed Unknown
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.4x 3324KBps
Linear Density Blank Disc
Track Density Unknown
Number of Layers 1

Complete Media Code

Same thing happens with the new verbatim disks - Im starting to think the problem runs deeper than simply crappy media. What do you think?

i'm stumped now; i would still get Nero updated, but that won't prevent the dvdinfo media info checks from work. I'll call on someone who knows about some NEC drives.....
