i have a cable modem(motorola SB5100 "surfboard") and i want to get faster speeds when downloading and i know i can't port forward with cable modems...and i was wondering if i could just switch out my cable modem with a router(so i can port forward)..and not have to worry about calling the cable provider about it...can this be done? or do i have to reset everthing? i have no knowledge in this area...thanks in advance...

A router sits between your cable modem and your pc. So its not a replacement, it's as well as. I have a couple of questions too, the answers to these may help me to help you.

What BT client are you using?
What port is the client using?
Do you have a firewall?

yeah i forgot to put those in..lol..sorry...it usually stays between 10kb/s(usually to the lower side) to 20kb/s...highest i've had (and only for a sec) was 32kb/s and the lowest as you can guess is 0kb/s...most of the time i have the blue face for Azureus...and i keep getting connection time out on the tracker(piratebay)..and i have cable dsl..so i thought it would be faster...thanks
