I cant write DVD (only DVD, not CD) with external enclosure.
I test 2 DVD Writer (Lite-on SOHW-1673 & Sony DRU-720A) and 2 enclosure (same model: 5.25" External Enclosure SSD-5251HDD) and 2 Computer (Celeron 2.4, MB:MSI 865 PE Neo2 & Athlon 3000, MB:MSI K7N2 Delta L) with Nero Burning Rom (Ver 6.6.0.5).
When I try to write anything on DVD, write process will hang in random time (bitween 4%-54%) and not continued (Im waiting for 2 hours), and I must turn my enclosure to nero can close.
I test every speed (1x-8x) and some discs (Melody +RW 2.4x , Sony +R 4x , Kingmax +R 8x , Melody -RW 1x)
Can anyone help me?

based on the media you have been using, i will definitely suggest you using BETTER media...the ones you have listed, well, 3 out of 4 are BOTTOM tier very bad media~ :P
look in my sig. for suggestions as to what GOOD media is, this should be a START in resolving your burning problems, changing media 1st will help me help you once we get something to work with~ :)
i have both the lower model(s) of your listed drives...the lite-on 1633 and the sony dru-710a, there is very little difference between what we have so i can help you further once the media problem is sorted out~ :)
good luck

well, if you can get successful burns when you connect it internally via IDE, then why the need for the external closure? perhaps this is something i am not following you on correctly here...
but, media MIGHT still be the problem...you say that you have "successful burns" now..but, that really depends on how you define "successful" :P burning on poor media will always mean problems down the road with errors and playback~ they might play NOW, but, will they play few months from now?
please clarify as to why if you burn them "successfully" via IDE, that you would need to use them externally...you seem to be giving yourself more problems than necessary.

well,
i hope others with more experience about external enclosures comes to help you out, i can only offer you what i KNOW about drives/computers/media~ :P
we have almost identical drives (i have had years of experience with my OWN drives that i use) and also, the reason i made a comment about your media is because MEDIA is one of the biggest problems associated with difficulties when you have GOOD quality burners that you are using~ :)
i think it might be something to do with your firewire/ whatever connection you use for your external enclosures, i don't own an external drive, so, that is only my GUESS, not a statement of fact~
i don't want to offer you any suggestions that i have no idea about.
but, in terms of my MEDIA suggestion, i have helped MANY members on here that were having difficulties burning...all it required to COMPLETELY solve the issues at hand was 1. change to better, high quality media and 2. update in firmware~ that was it~ plain and simple~ and now they are well on their way to many successful backups in the future~
so, please take into consideration my suggestion about using BETTER media, i think it will help you sort this problem once others more knowledgeable than me assist you with the external enclosure issue.
good luck, there is nothing else i can really suggest other than media here, hope others will be able to get your issues resolved soon~

I had this problem as well and the solution was that the external enclosure did not have a power supply powerfull enough for a dvd burner. It would burn cds and read dvds but not burn dvds. Hope this helps you.
