I also have this drive. Will it record dual-layer DVDs? By the way can someone explain the concept of dual layer DVDs. Will they play in normal (not PC) players? I'm new to this so please forgive the dumb questions. Thanks.

I have tried to access the http://support.benq.com/files/storage/Firmware/DW1600/B5G9.zip link to change my Philips 8601, but it is showing as corrupt or invalid. I would like to modify my system to enable -R and -RW, as I have a good stock of blank DVD disks I want to use up. Does anyone have the new link to be able change the drive?

try your link again , I went to it just fine...Make sure you dont have pop ups blocked. And if you get the icon message screen first just hit skip in the upper right hand corner. Dont forget to use the hex editor as i outlined earlier then upgrade the firmware to the latest rev b7t9 at

Hi all,

Similar problems, same DVD burner with my Dell computer. I can burn DVDs from home movies that play fine on my PC, but other PCs don't see the file on the DVD disc, let alone be able to play it. I'm using the Studio 9 Quick Start software that came with the PC along with the Dazzle hardware to upload my tapes onto my hard drive. IS this due to DVD+ vs DVD- issues? Am I doing something wrong when I create the movie with the Studio 9 software? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Jeff

hey all
I did the flash firmware update and all worked well. The only prblem I am having now is that when I burn a dvd and try to play it back on my home player it gives a message that i must check the region code and the dvd cannot play

I have an external burner and it does not give me this problem, I would use it but it seems to worn out on quality so I am trying to figure out how to make my phillips useful.

I bought the same Dell with the same Philips DVD burner and I burned a couple of backups of some different videos. Everything was fine for the first few but then I started getting an error "Media Not Found: Please insert a writable media" when it goes into the writing phase. Problem is I am still using the same type of blank DVD's out of my 50-pack. Any ideas?
I was and am using 1ClickDVD for the process, could this software be the problem?

WELL THANK YOU DELL FOR BEING SLIMY SALESMAN.
Thinking the dell burner (refered to in this forum), could write either - or + media i proceeded to buy 250 blank - discs from various suppliers (dont ask why), now opended return is not an option. so back in the past I turn to my trusty dell computer and burden my burner with some burning. sitting back I have a cup of coffe put my feet up and let the slave driver burn away those dvds etc. But o no no no it seems to be the burners day off rejecting all the - blank disc media i inserted Samsung, Sony pc line etc..Was there a hardware problem ? No . Mabye a software problem? erm.. No. in fact whether i was Bill gates or not there was nothing to be done. why? because Dell falsely advertised its burner could burn either formats - or +, but far from it, in reality it can only burn '-' media. So thank you Dell for ripping me off and making me lose over £100 of media,... but remember 'what comes around goes around...'making a quick buck IS getting harder to get away with to be continued... :( :)

Whats wrong with the info I've tried to provide? I'm not malicously trying to hurt anyone. Just gave some advice that I found useful that solved my problems with the phillips burner I also have. If I've over stepped my bounds and treaded on someone els's sandbox then let me know!

Which version are you trying to upgrade to? I used b7t9 and I see there is a new one out(b7v9). I havent tried it but if anyone else has then please post followup.
Use a Hex editor on B5G9.exe to change the checksum of B5A9 (the checksum of the original Benq DW1600) to 6D11 (the checksum of the firmware in the Philips 8601).
Make sure up go from a phillips to a 1600 first then convert from 1600 to 1620.
Details of the edit are

Location: Original Value -> New Value
F390: 42 -> 36
F391: 35 -> 44
F392: 41 -> 31
F393: 39 -> 31

Run the edited B5G9.exe. It will apply its firmware modification to the Philips 8601, turning it into a Benq DW1600.

Obtain a copy of 1600-1620_B7K9.exe from the Benq Web site here:
http://dvdpro.club.st/firmware/BenQ_FW.htm#DW1620

Run this. It will update the Benq DW1600 to a Benq DW1620

I'm simply trying to convert my philips dvd8601 to a benq drive using a hex workshop hex editor. I don't know what the F390, F391, etc. means but I am replacing all 42 numbers with36,35 with 44,etc. and saving these changes to modify B5G9.exe and double clicking the modified B5G9.exe to convert the philips drive to a benq drive and then getting the message, "This firmware can not be uppgrade!!". I don't know what a checksum is or how to find it on the hex-editor. Is it possible to walk me thru the hex-editor process since I believe this is where I am having problems? My heartfelt thanks.

I just got off the phone with Dell support b/c I discovered my burner won't write DVD-R. I think that's misrepresentation of the product. I am reluctant to do the cross flashing suggested here. Unless someone can really convince me that it's safe. Dell didn't sound too interested in replacing the drive. So I'm in a quandry...

I have a Dell 8400 - about a year old - and it came with the Philips 8601 DVD+RW drive. I have had no problem with it, but I've been using DVD+R media. However, the latest batch of cheap 8X media I bought (Linkyo) was only burning at around 4X. The update steps described here fixed that problem. I can't say if it will burn DVD-R, because I don't have any, but I can say it didn't harm my system at all.

Philips had no firmware update on their site, and I found this thread. I was also reluctant to crossflash, but I tried it. I downloaded the files from BenQ http://support.benq.com - for convenience http://tinyurl.com/daqwb

Getting the latest firmware installed was a three reboot process:
1. Get B5G9.zip - edit the executable like bill1996 said. (Replace the string "B5A9" with "6D11" at F390.) Flash the drive. Reboot. It's now a BenQ drive
2. Get 1600-1620_B7K9.zip - Flash the Drive. Reboot. XP reported finding New Hardware.
3. Get the latest firmware for the 1620. B7V9.zip was the latest I found. Flash the drive. Reboot. Burn some discs.

I know this message is repetitive, but I understand sb232 needing reassurance. Send a private message if you want more details...

krw123: Do NOT replace ALL occurences of those numbers! F390 refers to a specific location in that file - you only change 4 bytes total. This is the free hex editor I used, and it will show you the file locations. http://www.hhdsoftware.com/hexeditor.html

Skuk:Dowloaded your recommended hex editor. Then downloaded BG59 and applied the hex editor. Under the Hex column I scrolled to 0000f390 but was unable to find "42" in any character to the right of it. Also,I couldn't find subsequent F391,F392and F393 locations under the hex column. Relatedly, if I found "42" how would I convert it to "36"? Would it be possible for you to walk me thru this process? Thank you.

Did you open the .zip file or the .exe?
http://tinyurl.com/daqwb - get B5G9.ZIP

You MUST extract the B5G9.EXE file from the .zip first!
(The zip file has "4E DB E6 A7" at F390 - wrong file!)

The line SHOULD look like this to start with:
0000F390: 42 35 41 39 00 00 00 00 33 35 00 00 46 46 00 00
B5A9....35..FF..

You want to CHANGE it to this:
0000F390: 36 44 11 11 00 00 00 00 33 35 00 00 46 46 00 00
6D11....35..FF..

The position refers to the first pair of numbers on the row. Each subsequent pair is one location higher. You can click on numbers you want to change and start typing - the cursor keys work too.
