Thanx The OGS and DDP!
I will get those manuals first thing tomorrow. Wanted to get them today but the guy was out of town.
ddp, what do you mean with 50/50! Can't we just try it? I am so eager to get started and now I have to wait another day....grrrrrr
But if you think it is better to wait, I will do so.

I just have one manual. The other one turned out to be of a second computer he has. If I compare the lay-out picture it is the as the one of my sick computer.
The cover of the manual says:

PC266 systemboard
Socket A
M850LR user's manual

Sorry ddp, you are right it is 805lr.
I have been fumbling a bit myself and don't ask me what I have done but all of a sudden a completely different screen appeared! Right now I see on my screen:

Windows Setup
Loading files....
(Is this a good sign?)

Now it shows:

Welcome to setup:

- press enter if you want to install Windows XP
- Press R if you want to repair a Windows installation
- press F3 if you want to exit without installing Windows XP

When I press ENTER the following message appears:

Setup can't find a harddrive in your computer.
Make sure everything is connected and that the hardware configuration is correct.

I re-tried a couple of times but no still no go?
What should i do?

you are going to have to do a R.T.F.M.D(Read The F***ing Manual Dummy), not meant as insult just a saying i have to tell my customers. you have to find section in book last half is for bios that deals with auto detection of harddrive or something like that. i am going to find a copy either here or off net

Thanx for the compliment!
But I did check the manual.

Chapter 1: introduction
Chapter 2: Mainboard installation
Chapter 3: BIOS setup utility
chapter 4: Software & applications

I suppose it is one of the sub chapters of Chap. 3, like advanced BIOS features page. Is it the HDD SMART Capability?

reset connectors both power & ide to harddrive but shut poweroff & disconnect powercord 1st before playing with power & data cables as some boards still have power on when shut down. do you hear the harddrive making a noise like spinning. if no noise at all harddrive might be scrapped & you'll have to buy new one 40-80gig no higher i don't think

probably not if not detected by bios, switch hd cable from primary to secondary port on mother board, don't reconnect cdrom & see if bios finds hd or not. if not than you need new hd. let me know which way it goes
