Hey peeps,
I just wanted to comment on this whole post that I was reading.
Frankly, I think that everyone needs to take a step back and realize that yes, there are alot of people who don't know what they are doing when it comes to downloading and picking up "unwanted" things, such as spyware, adware....well you know the rest.
To be honest, we are ALL still noobs, because we don't know every little cotton picking thing there is. I myself, have been downloading since the days of Kazaa being the hip thing it was, and yes, even I have got viruses and stuff.
The thing about this is, and I am going to tell you the one phrase that noobs and experts need to know.....DO YOUR RESEARCH! Just because a program is free doesn't make it safe. You all read about the DC++ client that was infected. Now honestly, if you just hopped on a website, and you downloaded it, you wouldn't even know what the hell you were doing and been sitting there with a tainted copy.
All this hoopla about this program sucks, and download this, and do this and do that, is kinda childish. The one reason why people have SO many problems with computers and downloading worms and viruses, and this is going to shock you.......is because of USER ERROR. That means YOU! People should STOP blaming others even virus writers for stuff that THEY get on their computers. The majority of malware and such, is because people don't think before they download something. DO YOUR RESEARCH! If you are unsure about something ask before you start downloading like crazy. If you come across a site where you think it is too good to be true, guess what...like the saying goes.....it probably is.
This is not a pop shot at anyone, I just wanted to say to everyone that we are all noobs, I don't and neither does anyone else here care if you have like 20 degrees in programming or a freaking PHD is astrophysics, guess what.....there is always someone who knows ALOT more than you.
Here are some things that I think will be helpful to anyone:
1. Make your own decision about whether or not a particular software is good or not. Test it out. Remember, not everyone has the same computer, running the same programs, have the same isp, and so forth as YOU do. What works for one doesn't necessarily work for others. But try and find out what works for you. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
2. Don't go and blame others for getting spyware and viruses on your computer. The first step to prevention is knowledge. If you find yourself at a download site and you get something, refer back to a reputable site, like AFTERDAWN, and post the links and stuff and let them know to watch out. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
3. Any program that you have to pay for is kinda ridiculous since, and I am not saying this is ok, but you can download it for free somewhere. If you know what to look for you can download ANYTHING for free. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
4. Stop blaming the RIAA and MPAA about trying create infected files and stuff. This is a tug of war battle, if we all download stuff, they create fake downloads, since people are breaking copyright laws, they decide to start creating programs that can find out who you are. See, it is a no win situation. Just because it is free, doesn't necessarily make it SAFE (Remember that). AGAIN, DO YOUR RESEARCH.
Sorry this is a long post, but it is getting stupid to see people who do know a thing or two about computers, downloading, and what have you, to start bashing and critizing people because they don't know any better. Hey here is an idea, why not istead of being a smart @ss, you actually use what intelligence you DO have and make a contribution and help those who don't know, EVEN if the question sounds stupid.....There is no such thing as a stupid question....just stupid people who can't answer a question maturely.
Ok, so anyways....I hope this helps all and everyone learns to freaking relaz ;) It isn't the end of the world if you made a mistake and bought a program that has something you didn't ask for. Just chalk it up to experience.
Please note: These are obviously my opinions, so take them for what they are worth, no need to throw back with any useless and childish remarks, I got enough of that when I was growing up.
