I tried burn SA this evening and got those disc read errors.
On the other hand, I also burned the game at 11x...

If you have an older version of ps2, I would recommend burning to DVD+R media. That seemed to work for me.

I re-burned the game at 1x (though, DVD Decrypter seemed to burn as fast as 6x, even if I told it otherwise). It has some (slight) breakup here and there but the game is still totally playable. I managed to drive all the way to San Fierro without a DRE so I think the rest of the game is safe too.

strangest thing....
had a burn of GTA: SA for well over a year now. About 6 months ago I was playing it and...out of nowhere the game started hanging randomly, taking long times to load, etc...eventually the game shut down altogether.
I chalk this up to what must be a scratch on the disc and ignore it, knowing that I'll probably have to replace it with a new copy.
Well - got a new, perfectly working and verified copy and I'm getting the same errors. Very long load times, game will shut down, environments won't draw in...wtf is going on?
And I know it isn't the PS2 because several games I play regularly work fine.
Any suggestions?

certain games that access the memory as much as this game does, requires high quality media.
If you have a ps2 that can read DVD+R, I would recommend burning the game to DVD+R media as slow as your burners will allow. Stick with Verbatim or TDK. They've worked well for me.
