We call that a hitch hiking gesture in the US...

Does that have something to do with a seating arrangement in Canada? :)

Didn't see the movie since I never was a big Carredine fan.

But if it's an insult you want to bestow on me for just taking fun jabs at you, then I'll leave it at face value and accept the insult.

not meaning it as an insult as can't do the rasberry over the net without showering the monitor & the captain of the rescue ship wasn't pissed at the other captain

Glad to hear that! :) So now everytime I see someone hitch hiking, I'm gonna think that they are giving me a sign of the wrong kind! <G>

to get back on topic, i would have thought that with the price of say a cdrw-dvd rom drive compared to a 16x multi format burner, you would be better off just buying 2 good quality burners for $15-30 more

Great suggestion, especially since it can rip faster then most DVD-Rom's could anyway.

dont know about ripping faster as most dvd burners are read locked to 2x (get a hacked firmware to unlock) but the theory that you get a dvd-rom to save wear and tear on your burner was started back when dvd burners cost $500+ and roms were around $70 so it made sense. Now days the difference in price is a lot less

Under DVD Decrypter you can set to rip at different speeds. I use this as a default:

Instead of one for cpu you might consider DVD player for you TV. I use a cheap Apex AD 1225 ,which I bought at Sears for $30 and got a $10 rebate so I paid $20 and althou it is cheap it reads everything even compressed DVD copys. Most expensive DVD do not do well reading compressed. I have noticed the bigger the movie the more you have to compress it to fit on smaller DVD disk and will cause minor flicker. I know of no DVD rom for CPU that can do same as Apex unless of coarse Apex makes one for CPU. ascheri

scubabud thats a programme read speed, if you set it to max but your drive is locked to 2x, thats all its going to read at (firmware related). The same way that max isnt going to suddenly allow it to read above 16x, its the drives capabilities that count. If you set it to max and your drive is unlocked or never was, it will read as fast as possible

Anything a cheap Apex standalone can do, a internal drive can do better (what do you think puts those movies onto disc, encodes the divx etc to disc to allow your standalone to use it)

You obviously haven't tried it yet or it doesn?t work on your Burner. Lightning_UK wrote that special for his 3 Plextors. It does work with my Asus, (really an NEC because of it?s chips,) along with other burners.

Notice the Read Rates in the captured pictures below:

I have two units, one took (rounding up) 21 minutes and the other (rounding up) took 14 minutes. The movie is Shall We Dance which has 26 files and is 6.57 GB. Both of these units are in the same PC. If they are both locked at 2x then how could this be?

but what are the factory read rates for those drives??
ill admit i leave my A08 on max unless it has difficulties reading but i am yet to see a read locked drive read faster through anything other than a firmware upgrade.

and i think this is a more realistic speed

Not all drives are locked, not all drives are upgradable or unlockable

If you're referring the the PX-708A that is the factory read rate. Plextor offers a SpeedRead option in all their DVD burners which can be enabled by holding the eject button for three seconds before you slap a disc in :)

so your drive wasnt locked to 2x for movies to begin with?? unlike quite a few manufactures
I know my old hp will never read movies over 2x, my sony wont either, the pioneer is unlocked and averages around 8x read and the aopen rom is around the same
