Hey Nephilim, I think it is about time you fed that sig of yours, he's looking a bit skinny, it's hard work peddling a monocycle all day long.

If you love something set it free, if it comes back it is yours and always was, if it doesn't HUNT IT DOWN AND KILL IT !!!

He's on a little vacation right now. This explains why:

*Edited* You can go ahead and edit my post *Edited*
He's busy right now. Mind if I edit it instead?

*Edited* Also, you could ban me..... *Edited*
Not now he can't

then I get a new IP and re-register with different info.
And either we ban you again or you learn your lesson because basically it's less work for us to do that than for you to get a new IP and re-register and post some more.

Mark2005 ,

What burner do you have? Also, can you burn only at 2x, like I discovered I could?

i am going to try my burner on my mom's computer, to see if it's really dead, but until then, I bought a NEC 3520 from newegg - wow - no sticker shock there, $62 shipped!
:)
I hope it likes the prodisc f01 and ritek g05 media I have.

I do think it's dead, though, and even if it isn't if the new one works, I think I'm done troubleshooting this issue. I will post if I find anything interesting though, like the burner working on my moms machine, or whatever.

you will be happy with the nec . its a great burner and decent price . remember to set the jumper on the back of the drive correctly . i think you are going to find out that the burner does the same thing on your mom's pc but it is a good idea to test it to be sure .

Did you try uninstalling the drive through Device Manager before you physically removed it? Often times that'll do the trick when you encounter odd problems with a drive. Good to hear everything is working out :)

You have to remember this. Before you start erasing and reinstalling programs, try other programs or media. See if you get the same reaction. If you do than most likely your hardware is to blame. I don't know of any virus that goes after a dvd burner software. I've had my first burner for 3 months before it went down. Sent it back to manufacturer for repairs. After a year I noticed an increase in coasters with media that gave me no problems previously - probably a weak laser beam. How can I tell? Well the data was written to the disk but was too weak to be read by dvd rom. If you cool your computer down and then reboot it, you will find that you can read out those bad sectors. Time to change the hardware. New Hardware, no coasters. I bought nec 3520a and am quite satisfied with the results.

hi i have had my DVDrw a PHILIPS 1620K for about 3 weeks now and have only managed to backup 20 of my DVDs. I have been using DVD Shrink to do this. however recently all movies i try to back up will no longer fully burn only about 12% and then after it will fail. I have tried burning from Nero aswell and the process also fails. Device manager says my Drive is working fine. Can any one help !!!???? in this process i have wasted about 10 DVDs trying to sort out the problem !!!

before replacing the burner i tried different media...uninstalled and reinstalled the various software, got rid of the burner driver through divice manager and reinstalled it,went to sony web site and downloaded recent firmware and updated.
It all pointed to hardware.plus various burn software that ware unrelated to each other wern't working.I have had no problems backing up dvd's since replacing the burner

Well, I got my NEC3520A today from newegg, and it's working great.

Nice to be able to burn again.

So, are you all of the mind that 1000 burns is par for the course, and at that point it's reasonable that your burner might die and need replaced? It seemed early, to me. I was figuring it should have had a lot more life in it, yet. It certainly wasn't inexpensive, (plex 712a) at $140 about 10 months ago.

All I can add is that I have burned over 3000 DVD's in the last 2 or 3 years. During that time I have went though 4 burners. They ALL started to die the same way. First they would no longer burn at their peak rate. (the early burners were 2X and 4X, and they would only burn at 1X and 2X when they died.) Later the same problem, but it would drop down from ABLE to write at 12X, to 8, 6, 4, etc..even though I was only burning at 4X 99% of the time. When Nero would show the AVAILABLE burn speeds, over time they would simply disappear.
After a while I just started to replace them when they started to do this. I would put the old one in one of my back up computers, and put the new one in my main machine. The old ones would still burn to some degree, and usually burned CDs fine still, but still not at their peak rating even on CD's. Now I figure between 500 and 800 burns depending on the drive before it starts to take a dump. The Pioneer drives I have owned have died the soonest. So now I just buy Plextor. I tried a couple of LiteOn drives, but had no luck with those at all. I had to return them right away. I am building a new machine now that is SATA capable, so I am putting that new Plextor SATA drive in that. It is suppose to read fast as hell, and burn fast too. I will still probably only burn at 4X or 6X and use Ridata media, as it has never let me down in the past.
That is just my two cents worth, but it seems that when they go, they have all went in exactly the same way. IF they worked solid to begin with anyway.
My thanks to all of you, this is a great board and you have ALL been a big help to me in the past.
