i'm not saying don't use Recode, i'm just making it clear i don't know enough about it. I can decode logs fairly well, which is usually enough to get people working again, without me always needing to know the product..
had a quick google for the Recode target size, see if this helps - http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips571.html

Thanks for the links, Creaky. That is basically how I've been doing this. I deselected the overburn option, which wasn't checked for dvd's but was for CD's, but I deselected anyway. and I adjusted to decrease the target size to 4300MBs. the only way I could find to slow it down was to select the highest quality burn option which is suppose to slow down the process. But, I'm still getting failed projects. Can you take a look at this latest project log and tell me if I'm missing something?

@sipessx - you're gonna have to figure out how to slow down that burn speed. Are you sure the blank disc is in the drive before you start ?

I only have one dvd reader/writer, so the program prompts me to insert blank media when the dvd I'm burning is finished being decrypted.

Have you tried ripping your dvd with DVD Decrypter and then opening Nero Recode tell it to copy your dvd, when the next screen comes up open your file edit what you want, insert you blank disk, hit next and that screen will give you the option of setting your burn speed. This is just a suggestion for what it is worth :)

Hope it works, I usually do it this way with Recode, it is just a faster Shrink with except you can have burn control. Good luck.

well, I was able to successfully back up one of my DVDs. This one was small, less than 4300MBs without compressing. Since it was so small, I was able to use DVD Decrypter to rip and burn. I also was able to slow down the burn using DVD Decrypter to 4X. However, when I tried to copy a larger DVD first using DVD Shrink then DVD Decrypter to burn since I had success that way once. I got a successful burn but the copy wouldn't play in my DVD player. I'm beginning to think that my player is too finicky for highly compressed DVDs. I'm getting somewhere between 50-60% compression ratios for the main movie files. If I tried to rip using DVD Decypter then burn using Nero, I'm afraid I'm going to run into the same problem. I've been able to get completed burns ripping to the HDD first then burning to the disk using Nero Recode, but I always have the same problem with DVDs that play on my computer but not in my player. I don't think its the media, Verbatim, because I have made an authored DVD and tonight, a backup of a small DVD, less than 4300MBs without compression, that do play in my player.
Thoughts?
If I need to go back and try the DVD Decrypter/Nero Recode method, what mode should I be using with DVD Decrypter, File or ISO or other?
Thanks for your help.

@arniebear,
I had read in another thread that you use DVD Rebuilder and CCE for DVDs that need a lot of compression. I was already thinking that I was having a problem with the amount of compression that I was experiencing, then I read this post which kind of confirmed my thinking. Are problems like this typical with DVD that require a lot of compression to fit on a 4.7MB DVD disk?

@sipessx
Well we made some progress you got something to burn. IMO 50 to 60% for compression is a lot, I use Shrink deep analysis and quality enhancements for these large size files. Most of the time though I just do movie only, it makes for little compression, and using Decrypter to burn because you can control the speed. Lately, though I have been using dual layer media to backup my large movies because there is no compression. However, using RB/CCE will make a difference because the process is extremely slow, sometimes hours but you will get a very good backup. I have found that backing up is all about finding out what program works for you and gives you the results you want, so experimentation is the only way to achieve this.
Have you tried your backups on other standalones to see if they play on someone elses?

I have two players: a high end (four years ago) JVC and a very low end Chinese Cyber-somethingorother. Tried 'em both. Unfortunately, the disk works in neither.
How can I burn with Nero without encoding again after shrinking with, say, DVD Shrink?
If I decrypt with DVD Decrypter and burn with Nero, what mode should I be starting with in DVD Decrypter?

Okay, go to this site and take a look at the guides for burning using different programs.

The media you are using is 16x write speed, my suggestion is to go out and buy some 8x media, Verbatim, Fuji, Maxell or Sony and try these, this should slow your burner down. See if this works, your standalones may not like this speed disk.
