happy belated birthday~ hope you had a great nite with your hubby, my bday coming up too and i hope it will be pleasant with my wife as well~
anyways, back to your comment, yea, i custom built my own computer as i had used AMD extensively in the past (when i was a semi-gamer) hehe, but have now switched exclusively to Pentium as i use the Extreme Edition chips, they are unbelievably fast and stable on my particular setup, hyperthreading helps and w/ 2mb cache, it's more than enough for my computing/burning processes now~ :)
booktyping is when you change the DVD+R format disc into the most highly compatible dvd-rom format...this can be done a variety of ways and since you have the same burner as me, i do my "booktyping" through shrink/nero~
this is the same very short/abbreviated guide that i wrote to a friend of mine with the same drive :
for an example: let's say with DVD Shrink...which is free by the way, this is the software program that i use 99% of the time to backup my dvds...here is what you do...
1. put the original dvd into your sony dru-710a
2. open DVD Shrink program...
3. click on top left corner "open disc"
4. let it analyze it..this may take a little while...but, RIGHT before you are ready to burn a screen will pop up
5.this screen says "Backup DVD" at the top...
6.there are various tabs here to choose your burning preferences...ie. target device, dvd region, quality settings, options, and finally the one WE are interested in "burn settings" tab
7. click on that one, it will be a dropdown menu from there...you want to "tick" the "book type DVD-ROM" (make sure the checkmark is in there) and that is it...plain and simple~ the sofware will automatically change and booktype the DVD+R media you insert to dvd-rom...that is it...it works wonders even though it's such a small step. (this is done when you use Nero to burn, after dvdshrink analyzes/compresses, that is how i prefer to burn)
good luck tracy, i wrote that stupid little guide quite some time ago, but, i still use it to this day and give it to people that own a sony dru-710a drive like me; i prefer DVD+R media personally too and this is how i booktype the media using NERO/dvdshrink settings to change DVD+R to dvd-rom~ hope that helps~

i dont know why people like verbatims so much.i bought them once and ive gotta admit they suck.depends ofcourse which ones you get.taiyo yuden are the best.i can admit that but verbatims arnt 2nd best.maxell is amazing(made in japan)and even if you dont get the ones with maxell002 code you get ritek g05 which is still good.verbatims are risky.
