I suspect the NVIDIA controler(s) is the preferable one(s). I did find the CD that came with the m'board, and I think it's the one with the NVIDIA stuff on it. I haven't put it in yet.
I used to burn a 16x. It seems I should be able to do that again. I'm going to try at 4x to see what happens.
Incidentally, the usually stable machine just crashed. It's back up but the reboot was a little out of order: the wallpaper showed briefly _before_ the loading your personal settings. Anyway, it seems to be working okay now.
I take that back. I put the CD in and I'm getting a warning aroub Autoloader.A . Of course, I used this CD before - when I got the m-board. I'm doing a virus scan. Sending this now. See you on the other side.

SIGuardian, a disk monitoring program, is reporting T.E.C. (Threshold Exceeds Condition, particularlly in the Seek Error Rate, of the system/boot drive, or C drive.
Actually, perhaps a hint to this, high temperature of the HD (but oddly, all three of the HDs), is what made me want to fix the DVD writing ability. I wanted to back things up. But now, given that SIGuardian gives a fail date only two days away, I'm going to devote my attention to cloneing the C drive to H, a 160 GB drive that I now just keep movies on.
As I just posted, I just had a small problem with a trojen, but I belive that's solved now.
I haven't re-installed the NVIDIA controlers yet.

I still haven't gotten the burner to work, that is, it will do CDs but not DVDs. I tried using 4x instead of 16x, and it still doesn't work.
It truns out the malware warning I got from MS Antispyware was incorrect. I also determined the SiGuardian warning was irrelevant and probably incorrect. So other than the DVD burner not being able to burn DVDs, my system is okay.
I?m going to post a fresh Nero error log in a new thread.

just paste the new log here, it's best to keep the problem contained to one thread until completion. spreading the problem across threads makes it longer to fix the problem and makes it harder for ppl to help you

Previously, I uninstalled the drivers, and the Windows XP ones took over. The DMA went on, but the burner still didn't write. So you're saying I should try that again?
What would make it successful the second time around? Would there be something else to adjust once the Windows drivers are back in?

if you go back thru the thread (i had to do that to refresh my memory) we got as far as getting rid of those pesky nvidia drivers, we had atapi drivers in there place then the last input i had was trying to get you to go 4x instead of 16x..... i think you'll need to do that again to make progress...

Well, I'm going to try it again. But for some time, *with* those Nvidia drivers, everything worked.
I also just got the latest version of Nero. I'm going to install that.

I installed the new Nero 7 Ultra Edition. It's actually several apps, and I'm pleased with it. It replaces a slew of auxiliary programs like file converters, etc. Everybody must get it.
I didn?t change the NVIDIA drivers, and I just tried the new Nero with the old arrangement. Everything worked, and I?ve already successfully burned three DVDs. Looking at the log, I noticed DMA is still off, but it doesn?t seem to matter now. Thanks, everybody, and particularly Creaky. It was actually that comment about my version 6 being old that made me upgrade.
