Then it probably wasn't an accident that they sent me the DQ60 instead.
Thanks for the info; I thought that the 1640 was a solid burner, and was disappointed to be receiving something else. I still may go ahead an get the NEC 3550 as well; after having to replace the original HP DVD burner, I'd like to make a completely fresh start. Two is better than one...I guess I'm hedging my bets here.
I'd rather not spend another two months in forums and newgroups thinking I was doing something wrong as I continually made $1 dvd coasters. Sometimes it's just bad hardware.

NO ...the 1640 is supposed to be one of the all time good drives. the benq dq60 is just a rebranded, junk teac. I was looking at the nec 3550 also. There is some info on the nec in the section of the forum that lists the manufacturers of different drives. I think what has happened is the dq60 has benn substituted for the 1640s. The are supposed to better but they are not.

Guys, I bought a BenQ 1640 from an oline store in Renton, WA, and received a BenQ DQ60 in its place today?
After reading all this about the DQ60. I really think I should send it back, havent installed it or tried it out, Would you advise to send it back?
I really want the burner to be able to burn DL DVDs, and looking at this thread, it looks like Ill end up with quite a few coasters...
Thoughts please?
Who sells the DW1640 nowadays?

GO TO newegg.com and select dvd rw drives , then read the reviews from other purchasers ... not a good one. I would send it back , i sent mine back. I would contact the place of purchase and give them a chance. If the give you any crap tell them you purchased a 1640 and sending a dq60 is fraud. If they still do not see the eror of their ways call your credit cars company and tell them it is a disputed transaction. You will not have to pay untill it is resolved. Your credit card company will hit them over the head till they issue an rma ( for full refund) or let you keep the drive for free ( doubt that )... anyway usually till it is resolved to your liking. send your DQ60 back to hell were it came from.

the dq60 and the 1640 are not the same. In my opinion, if you ordered a 1640 and they sent you a dq60 without your knowledge that is fraud. Do what ever it takes to get them to take back the dq60 as they are junk. If they give you a load of crap , call your credit card company and report the transaction as a disputed transaction and let the credit card company hit them over the head till they come around to YOUR terms.

Thanks for the info guys,
I have emailed them requesting an RMA to ship the DQ60 back... Even the packing slip says DW1640, I hate the idea that they feel they can send a model that I didnt purchase, and hope Id be okay with it, without an email or phone call asking.

I'm guessing the shop in Renton, WA is CompuVest; they've pulled this same stunt on me and others. It's no accident - they're trying to pass the DQ60 off as the DW1640. I just sent mine back, but I'm concerned that I might not get the DW1640 at all since it seems to have dissapeared from their site.
BEWARE OF COMPUVEST!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the dw 1640 is no longer made. I can not find any anywhere on the internet. Did you get an RMA to return the dq60 ?

[quoye]I think that the dw 1640 is no longer made. I can not find any anywhere on the internet. This is a correct statement ... I have been going back and forth with the BenQ company about the DW1640 and the DQ60 .. At first some isiot told me that they're the same and finally, at long last, I talked with a person in the know there ... He told me that the DQ60 is made by Teac and that the DW1640 is no longer available .. it will be replaced by the DW1650 and the DW1625 will be replaced by the DW1655 ... I don't know if the chipset is going to be the same as the other DW series, but I got the impression that all of the DW series drives are basically the same ...

It's so damn frustrating trying to get answers from mfgs. You get better information from the forums.

Hi,
Most of the BENQ DQ60 opinion on NEWEGG is based on the shipping version of the firmware. Once people started to discover upgrades on the Japanese web site, the drive performance has improved and the latest NEWEGG reports reflect that fact. Now, after three firmware enhancements since the initial release, things have improved further. The latest firmwre was released on December 28, 2005 and is the first to appear on the BENQ support site:
Version: MREC
http://makeashorterlink.com/?I3042656C
Unfortunately, there still remains missing software that should improve the drive's quality but is promised in the future. You should give the drive a fair shot before burying it. I agree its not as good as the 1640 but it is the only BENQ multi drive that can do DVD-RAM in addition to DVD+/-RW(L).
Soon, the 1650 and 1655 replacements for the 1640 will be available. The DQ60 remains a niche drive for people who want DVD-RAM as a third option. I am optimistic it will improve but I can fully understand why people have been turned off by early negative reports. Bad form for BENQ, a normally great company for making computer peripherals!

Hi... thanks for the reply...
I am glad to see the firmware update. I have the 1655 and the DQ60. I am selling the DQ60 as my 55 arrived 2 days ago. I think with the firmware, this drive needs more testing and don't feel the final verdict is out yet.
I purchased the 55 for the lightscribe feature.
Happy New Year everyone....
(And, Russian Christmas!)

Hello All...
For those looking for the DQ60, there are plenty on eBay with some competive pricing. (this is obvious but I was just looking there and saw many for sale) The 1655 is available on neweg* and some other US sites now with pricing coming off the $65.00 price of two weeks ago...
I purchased mine off a Canadian site two weeks ago. The shipping was slow due to the holidays (plus it was free shipping)...

Well, I finally got the NEC 3550a that I changed from a DQ60 and really like it. I am using Liggy and Dees firmware 1y4rpc1 and it does excellent. Bitset to DVDrom and all is well.
Glad to see that Benq is getting the bugs out of the badged DQ60

I am sending my DQ60 back to Newegg tomorrow. Even though in their ad it says for the DQ60 that they ( newegg) will only replace a deffective drive, all other is warranty from the manufacturer for the drive. Newegg sent me an RMA for a full refund + they are going to refund what I paid to ship it back to them if I fax them a copy of my receipt.
