Thank you for your reply, but I gotta tell ya that I am losing faith in NEC burners. A couple of years ago, I started with an I/O Magic 8x RW DL. Saw all the raves about the NEC drives here and other webs and purchased the 3500AG 16x and later the 3520 which subsequently was returned because it went haywire. Some time ago I installed the I/O Magic drive in an external enclosure and currently use it on one of my PC's---it burns faster that the NEC.
Current reviews of the latest NEC 3550 are not impressive. I began this thread looking for some techie info "re" rebadging because I'm in the market for another burner and am researching alternatives to NEC---I dunno', maybe they are the best.

Unforyunately the BenQ DW1640 has all but disappeared here in the USofA .. I have been in contact with NewEgg and it isn't looking good for them to be getting any more .. Either get the BenQ DW1620 or go to CompUSA and get a HiVal (in the CD Freaks forum, they all agree that it's a rebadged DW1640) ...
LG seems to be an alternative with easy bitsetting ...

@mort
I have the NEC 3540A w/hacked firmware. It rips real fast and can burn faster. U.S. Marshall's ripped in 5 min. 26 sec. and though not recommended can burn 8X media at 12X. And yes, all of the Nero tools work with it, including the PI/PO error scanning.

I'm hoping that the 3550a will be as good as your 3450a. I should have it in a week to ten days.
Cheers, check your pm

Pappaboy, if you are looking for the BenQ 1640 you probably aren't going to find it in many stores. However, the Plextor 740a is supposed to be a rebadged BenQ 1640. Buy one of those and you've got the same thing with different clothes on.

FiremanDB:
Thanks for the tip. I think there are a couple of e-tailers who still have the 1640 available as I was searching for it last week. Can't recall who, but if they are available Pricegrabber will list them. I will look into the Plextor 640.
Have a good year.

Got to agree the 716A is sweet, the new 740A needs some work. Performance so far is okay, but the lack of booktyping ability unless you use DVD InfoPro is a downer.
