best DVD burner on the market

The BenQ 1650 looks mighty tempting. I need to replace my Plextor 716A which has decided to quit reading DL DVDs burned on another burner. I've seen good things about the Pioneer 111D and its North American cousin, the DVR-710BPK. Can anyone give me adivce on the Pioneer?
Lightscribe is not important. My media is both Verb and TY. I have a few InfoDisc RW left over too. I use Roxio 8 Suite as my authoring software and PowerDVD 6 as my playback.
I just want a quality burner that won't crap out a week after the warranty is over.

BenQ 1650 is an excellent allrounder & ideal for internal use. The restriction for external use is f/w. Ideally when internal drives are considered for external use. You want a drive that supports UDMA 4 & not UDMA 2 as in the case of the 1650. It will work, but you maybe capped @ 8x. The Pioneer 111D is UDMA 4. Therefore with the right caddy is ideal (make sure it has prolific chipset). With the 111D 16x is possible. In reality 12x maybe the top speed for good burns. The difference between 12x & 8x is not that much. If BenQ brought out a UDMA 4 f/w (the 1650 will support this) then the 1650 would be a clear winner. However BenQs position is unclear with its links with Lite-On (most if not all current Lite-Ons are UDMA 4).
Currently for external use the Pioneer just shaves it.
I'm very very new at these DVD drives so I'm kindda confused a little bit. But you're saying that I should get the Pioneer or a BenQ one? The speed is no problem, I could do 8x speed fine.
Will I be able to use it with a Sony laptop?
One more quick questions, what is f/w? LOL...I'm dumb

Basically if you wanted to push things to the limit then the Pioneer 111D is the one. If speed is not the be all then the BenQ is the one. Personally I'd go with the 1650.(Either drive would be OK with your Sony laptop).
As for f/w short for firmware. "The firmware--the software built into the flash memory that acts as the control center for a drive's operation--can be updated on the fly and is therefore always in flux, subject to updates as needed over time."

Thanks for the reply zebadee, sorry I wasn't that clear, but my question is: Which would be the better drive? The Pioneer 710 or the BenQ 1650?. BB has the Pioneer 710 package on sale for $39.99.

I have one more question.
So I'm buying the BenQ 1650. Do I need to buy anything else to connect the drive to the computer, like a USB cable?
I'm really clueless about these things.

The reason zebadee you need to get a caddy or external case is because the benq 1650 dvd burner is made to be put inside of the computer tower but because you have a laptop you will need to get the external case to put the benq 1650 in and then you will use a usb cable that comes with the external case and plug that into your usb ports on your laptop.
also the external case is the case that houses the drive to make it external to be used with the computer.

angel9891, If your in the states try NewEgg, the link I give looks the closest to what I use. I'm in the UK so the make is different.
I suggest you take a look at a few, decide how you want to pay. Read the reviews if any. If not in the states let us know where you are.

@rcm999: I just spent 9 days visiting my son and his family. I took him out to spend some of his money on a DVD burner, DVD reader, and a 120Gb hard drive. He got the Pioneer 111D. The burner is fast, but it hates all Verbatim media, but it loves the TDK (CMC Mag) media. That alone, made me tell my son that I was sorry I had him get that burner. LOL
I did not have the chance to get any TY media while I was there, but I really liked the burner. It was a little lounder than my Plextor 716A, but then again, my Plextor went belly up after 16 months of relatively light use. It won't write to any DVD media now.

Hi zabadee! Can you help me with this?
How do I set the drive jumper to master mode? I connected the DVD drive to my laptop but my laptop doesn't recognize it at all.

Hi Saugmon,
Just a comment ... I disagree with your statement that BenQ burner prefers DVD+R ...
I bought 50 Taiyo DVD+R 8X and 50 Taiyo DVD+R 16X and my BenQ 1640 with Firmware BSOB and BSMB DID NOT do any better than using the
DVD-R ...
I bought these DVD+Rs because I saw few postings with the same "comment" as yours on different website and I thought well there might be something to this ...
Well ... these will be my LAST DVD+Rs that I will use.
I ONLY use Taiyo Media ... forget everything else ... including Verbs.

you'd be better off using the +Rs and booktyping with your BenQ. Mine(1650) loves 8X TY T02s+Rs book typing them to DVD-ROM.

Try playing those benq dash backups on 50+ stand alone players and pc drives!
The booktyped plus format to dvd-rom does kick some major butt when it comes to stand alone compatability. Stand alone player compatability only!
