Is Verbatim any good? My friend has some of those so I could probably borrow one of those.

Oh yes!! Those and Taiyo Yuden are the best!
Grab some of them and try again. Let's keep the burn speed for now at 4x or 6x.

Haha, he's a good friend. I'm guessing the only person I'll be trading those imations to is the trash can if the Verbatim disk works.

Crap, Verbatim got my hopes up as it started burning, got to 16% (on my internal burner, which I hadn't had one even get to 1% on since the problem began), but then got my standard error of problem reading data. :( Not sure where to go with this next. HEre's the error report.

Oh no - that dang read error!
Okay I haven't totally run out of suggestions just yet so let's see what we can do.
Now when you tried the external in another pc - did you try the same DVD?
What's changed pc wise since you were last able to burn?
Look in Nero ToolKit>Info Tool>ASPI Tab. Does anything show as corrupted there?
Next I would suggest reading from one drive then burning to say the external. Or save to the hard drive 1st then open the files in Nero or Decrypter(decrypter only burns iso's)and try to burn
Last you can do a hard drive check for errors. But let try the above 1st.

Just got home from work, thanks for your continued help binkie7. Yes, I used the same DVD on both drives. I tried the Nero Info Tool, nothing seems to be corrupted.
I also have already tried backing it up on one drive and burning with the other, and copying it with Shrink and then going into Nero and burning it that way, no luck.

Okay - what has changed pc wise since you were able to burn? Add/update any programs/browser etc.
From your 1st post when you tried to open the file in Shrink - you said you received an error - did it say anything besides unable to open?
If you still have an .iso or the video_ts try and play it from the pc and let's see what happens.
In the aspi tab in Nero what aspi's drivers and version # are listed in there?
editted to add: Is this the only problem your having w/ the pc?

The only thing I can think of that has changed is that I am on a different internet connection. The last time I remember burning successfully was when I was at college, and now am at home.
When I tried to open the files in Shrink the error I got was "cyclic redundancy error" something along those lines.
I opened a Video_TS and it worked fine in VLC Media Player.
This is the only problem I have had with my computer at all. It is fairly new, I think I got it in October-ish.
Ok under System Aspi I have:
WNASPI32.DLL Version 4.6 (1021)
ASPI32.SYS Version 4.6 (1021)
WINASPI.DLL Version 4.6 (1021)
WOWPOST.EXE Version 4.6 (1021)
Under Nero ASPI I have:
WNASPI32.DLL Version 2.0.1.74

Hmmm getting more perplexing. If the file was corrupted I wouldn't think you could play it.
The are 2 newer versions of the drivers you have listed but that may not help. Your do have the latest one for Nero.
There seems to be a communication problem between your drive and hard drive - could be why there is an error reading data.
Try a new file - use can use the same dvd - burning w/ DVD Decrypter. But 1st see what you have set here in decrypter(might throw this one out the window) Go to Tools>Settings>I/O tab - under interface which one is checked?
Not using IE7 as your browser?
You can still do a Chkdsk on the hard drive for errors but that takes awhile and will lock you out until done.

In DVD Decrypter, SPTI - Microsoft is selected under interface.
I use Mozilla FireFox as my internet explorer to answer your other question.

Sorry for all the questions btw but one more for you- is it only 1 movie on this pc giving you this problem or does it happen to other ones you try?

Okay so we've ruled out media, drive (the external works in another pc) and dvd.
So try the hard drive check (another maintenance thing). It will check for errors and repair them.
In my computer right click on your hard drive - usually c. Click on the properties tab than tools tab. Under error checking click check now.
Then select both options. Windows will ask for a restart once you do this will run and windows will open when done. may take awhile so run it over night.
Let me try and find a guide.
Another thing to check is your ide cables (ribbon) make sure all drives are have secure connections.
In the mean time I'm going try and think of some other solutions or causes for this error. (trying 2 avoid system restore/reformat - I may be missing something)
Edit to add: found a guide:

So I did a chkdsk, and now opened up a Video_TS in Shrink which had previously not opened (cyclic redundancy error) and now it opened and got thru it ok until the burn failed during "writing lead-in" It got my hopes up :(

So here's an interesting new development. Today I decided to try if I can burn a data cd. So I popped in a blank CD-R and then went to my computer to explore the CD Drive and it said D:// Is not accesible - incorrect function. Uh-0h...

One step forware - one step backwards!
Okay I can't really find much on this drive. Looks like a newer drive.
Who made the laptop?
Next try uninstalling the ide channel reboot and let windows do it's thing and reinstall. If that doesn't work uninstall the drive and same deal.
Here's a guide for dma but will so you what to do:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038
Next if you have any other burning software (not including decrypter)
unisntall it like Sonic or what came with your pc - uninstall it. Write down the serial #'s. Then run the ccleaner again.
There are 2 other drivers in your log that may be causing a conflict.
I see no more verbs back to the Imations!

I just happened to open iTunes and got this surprising message, it may or may not be useful in figuring out what is goin on here.
"The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."

Hi kregmo73
The new error message you received normally means Shrink can't handle the copy protection.
So to overcome that have AnyDVD running in the background (free 21 day trial - http://slysoft.com) while your have the original in the drive.
I'm guessing you already ripped this w/ decrypter? There are some that even ripped w/ decrypter will still give shrink a problem. There is a workaround but AnyDVD is much easier.
Or free would be rip with DVD Fab Decrypter (still updated) 1st then process in Shrink.
http://dvdidle.com/free.htm
Now the iTunes - I've seen this a couple of times when unisntlaling/installing Nero. So uninstall iTunes then reinstall and you should be good. One option I would not pick is 'launch when Windows starts' (or somthing to that effect). This option has the program running on start up. Me I'd rather pick when I want it to run it.
Have you been able to succesfully burn a CD yet?
Try and get some more of those verbs if you can too.
