I know its not the same but i had a sony ericsson phone, and you could update the firmware on that by remotely doing it on your pc thru the usb cable. And all you did was hold down the 'c' button and then run the update on the pc and it would flash whatever firmware onto the phone, now point is that you could put pretty much any firmware on there, i.e i had a k750i and you could put the w800i software on it so i assume because it wasnt an update run thru the phone that it had no version checks to make sure it was the correct update etc.... maybe it would be possible to flash directly to the psp thru a pc and force firmware (and custom firmwares) onto it!?!?

That installation of flash is a good idea because the modchip uses a program that installs firmware and removes it.

in relation to the stupid idea that this thread is about, it says they've modified the 2.71 eboot to say 2.72.
For 2.70 users couldn't they use the 2.71 update so that it loads past all the security checks and then put it in sleep mode before confirming the actual upgrade, ie past all the screens that say whats in the update etc... and shove in a memstick with the 1.50 eboot on it - but change the param.sfo to say it's still the 2.71???
Unfortunately I can't test this method cos i've only just (thanks to Dark_AleX) downgraded from 2.6 and i'm sticking with 1.5 forever - or until something better comes along - cos i can't afford the undilluted platinum.

no point paying for the modchip unless you can afford to just splash out on one for novelty, you'd be better off if your strapped for cash getting a second hand psp that can be downgraded or one thats already 1.5 if your seriously considering spending money, but dont be too hasty cos they're coming out with new stuff all the time and no-one thought a 2.6 --> 1.5 downgrader would happen

ok just tried doing what i said with 2.0 update (didnt want to go any higher in case it went wrong and ended up with 2.71), anyhow you cant put it in sleep mode once the update prog has loaded just tried pushing the power switch up and down for 10 mins.

i dunno just making it up as i go along, just one other thing, i know the downloadable firmware updates are encrypted etc... are the ones on the umds the same cos if you load them it says about not removing the mem card or the disc for the relevant one so maybe they put less security on the umd ones cos they didnt think theyd be messed around with

you can't do it, if you switch sticks after the PSP logo but before the update actually starts by using sleep mode, the security checks say the update is unusable. And if you actually get into the update and then swap mem sticks it says the memcard has been removed and cancels the update. Same with updates on UMD's.
