I to own a Accurian adr-3223 and upgraded to a 160GB GD. I used the fat 32 program to format the new drive. I copied the file structure exactly and it worked. The 80 has a small unused portions space. I suppose it has to do with recording time. The only problem that I had was when we had a power failure. When I turned it on again it said it was not turned off properly. It does what I think is a quick chkdsk. After it did this all the programs that I had saved were cut down to 30 min. All the info was correct, like 1:30 min for program 1 or 2:00 for program 2 but it only had 30 min. of program content saved. This happened a couple of times. I have since bought an APC UPS 350va for less than $30.00 and plugged in all my hd recorders in. Now I just make sure they are all turned off with the power button and have not had any problems. It did double the record time. I used a seegate that I happened to have. All seems to be ok (6months since conversion) as long as I turn it off correctly Good Luck

n4jrf--Thanks for the info. So far 80GB has been enough for my needs, but anticipate needing more in the future.

n4jrf, I have a few questions. When you lost power and the programs were reduced in half was the drive reduced back to 80GB's? If so, when you put the drive back in the computer to reformat, what did the computer show as the size of the drive? Also, did you try the drive in the recorder after formating without putting the basic folders on the drive. Thanks.

Can anyone tell me does this recorder allow you to timeslip? (I think thats what its called, start recording a show, and 15 min later, start watching it while its still recording the end of the show?)

all i did was delete the remaining programs and it worked fine. It all ways said 160gb I never had to remove it or reformat it. I never used the defrag program that the accurian has though it may only see it as a 80gb? I'm not sure but i don't want to try

I picked up on of these when Radio Shack had them for $250 after rebate and although I love it and hug it daily, I have gone through three units due to problems when editing saved shows. Occasionally when editing the unit will stop and the show will not be able to be moved, edited or played. Other than that it's pretty flawless (save for every once in a while a recorded show has a high pitched whine) and I have not seen a unit that's comparable to what it does for the same price. Sure it'd be great it it was perfect but I love that I have found out thanks to this thread how to enlarge the hard drive if I want. Just wish I could get rid of macro too but that's no large deal.

Question: does anyone edit the shows they save on a computer? I'm looking for a program where I can cut out commercials (cut and splice back together) without the program re-encoding it and losing quality.

v1nce--Mine has locked up a couple of times when I tried to input info too fast. Just unplugged unit for a few seconds and plugged it in and lost no info. Hasn't happened since I haven't crowded it inputting info.

I just bought this recorder last night for $199. The unit shows it as a clearance so I don't know if they are no longer making tnis model but I've been really impressed with the reviews on it plus the great price.

just wondering what kind of drive you can use to do this upgrade? does it have to be ATA or can it be PATA don't think SATA will work. How big can we go? just wondering. Also, the H2Format utility didn't work for me and came back with german errors. All this after I deleted and created a new partition in XP Disk manager. I went out and found/used swissknife.exe from 2cows which worked very well and was really easy. thanks for any answers you can provide --soob

Thanks NMILT, if it wasn't for that lock problem it'd be perfect! I do so love mine.

soob: you need a regular IDE (PATA not SATA) drive.

n4jrf: question - have you ever told the machine to format the larger drive and if so did the drive stay at 160meg or 80?

I've had the ADR-3223 for about 6 months and have been happy overall. It does what I need it to do and price was good. 2 questions I haven't
seen anywhere else though.

1) If unit is basically same as LiteOn 5045, I would be interested in upgrading firmware, but the firmware in it now is 0202, which is not listed on the sites. So where would I find that file if I wanted or needed to go back to 0202? Don't want to try it without that option.

2) I've found occasional problems with anything recorded to hard drive over 30 minutes, that at some point you play back and can only get to
around 45 minute mark, no way to play to end. Anyone else see this on Accurian or LiteOn? Could it be fixed in earlier/later firmware?

Thanks a lot.

mska....I can't help on your first question, but on the second I have not had this problem. Consistently record two to four hours and have always been able to watch total recording.

mska: I have not had that problem either but have you called the 1-800 tech support number on the back of the manual? Also, have you reformatted the drive and still had the same issue?

Thanks, I have not called support, will check with them. I have not formatted the HD, though defraged a lot. I can put in another drive and format to compare, that way I won't lose all recordings.
Thanks,
Mark

I routinely save off anything I want to keep, catch up on my shows then reformat the drive myself.

Either hit the button marked POWER on the remote (red button top right) or the button marked ON/OFF on the unit itself. (Left front)

Don't worry about it, I was happy to help! Think about this: you may feel a little silly but just think about the guy you called at the help line that didn't get it :)

hello there.

I just found this site and wanted to ask if anyones Accurian has crashed as mine has after defragmenting and editing/splitting titles??
Last week I got one and this happened: the remote and all outer buttons wouldnt respond and there was no output.

Returned it and got the Polaroid unit at WMart which I have.

However I like the GUI of Accurian better and posted tonite what happened at RS on the AVS forum.

I got another unit tonite for the awesome price of 139.00! and couldnt leave the store after they offered it for this price.
But Im concerned about what happened to my first unit when it seemed to just totally crash.
Has anyone had this happen after splitting titles/deframenting and the power wouldnt even come on with the outer power button nor remote and then if it did, there was no video output at all?

thank you to any replies ahead of time!

Bought an adr-3223 3 months ago. It really works fine but does anybody know how can I connect it to my laptop via firewire? I would like to play movies in the laptop to be recorded on the 3232, is it possible? Would appreciate some help.

You can't. That firewire port is for a video camera to dump to the recorder. As to recording movies that can be arranged with the proper cable (out in your laptop, ins on your accurian) however they must be unprotected movies (ala not commercial DVDs).

Wow! That's an unenviable price for an 80gig HD and DVD recorder! I already have one and maybe its worth it to get one just in case this one bites it... hehehe...
