Yes you are making sense :)
A don't think switching the burner to another pc would make a diff.
It more media related on the burning failures.
Something you might also want to consider is trying the +R media.
Since the drive is an oem LiteOn you should be able to booktype these to DVD-Rom making them almost universally compatible w/ players.
Best Buy has Verbatims on sale - 25 for 6.99 - probably all 16x too.
For another drive instore hmmm look for LiteOn, Plextor. Pioneers are good too but they don't have the booktyping ability.
@mdweaver
How are you making out? If still havings problems best bet is too start a new thread - can be a bit confusing with all the different logs :)

I would suggest a BenQ DW1650 from newegg.com. I know you wanted B&M store but you'll pay twice and maybe three times as much. Never seen BenQs in stores stateside. Best burner for the money around $35.

I'm not gonna toot my horn, but,(blowing very hard), at best buy I picked up a cyberdyne/cyberhome burner for $35, can get firmware updates direct from cyber home that "The Firmware Page" is still on 120, and I'm on 170, never had a problem, some 4+ cases of 50 dvd's burned, is about 3 yrs. old, model DX162D-A, does 16x dvd +/- r/rw, either 4 or 8x, (can't remember) dvd +r DL, and up to 40x on all cd's. Best off-brand thing I ever paid money for.
Oh,,has book typing also. And one last toot, comes with 11 international awards!

@ mdweaver
the guys at the CD forum might be a litle more adept in giving you the information that you need, not to say we can't help you, but may take some trial and error, still wanting to know what kind of "bootable" cd you mean,¿system start-up? if so don't use Nero.use windows, or the OS that you have, guaranteed to get the right files on there.
@alisha
not that it would make a great difference, but when doing firmware updates, it is reccommended to have the drive being flashed on the master position, but if this had previosly caused you grief, don't worry. As far as switching to another computer, compaq IS HP, diff. in formulation, hardware, etc., but HP bought compaq, is the same thing. I Am very inclined to agree with binkie7, your drive is a 16x for +r, use those and in the "booktype" choose -r, that way you can use the, probably, cheaper media and still play in virtually any player, because the rarer things become the more they may cost you.
And, if you want to investigate the possibility of a new burner, yes, go to best buy and compair!
