Do you have to buy the cable if you want to unlock a phone?. . .or can you just use the one that comes with them?

Also, is there a difference in unbranding and remote unlock?

Yes, remote unlock indicates SIM unlock, meaning you can use the pgone with any provider
Flashing (debranding) puts the functionality back to it OEM style. Cingular criples the phone and removes lots of featues while loading it with it own crap. Flashing will get ride of that.
To Unlock you need a special cable dcu-11 i believe. NOT THE ONE THE PHONE COMES WITH! flashing requires the stock cable that came with the phone.

i have w810i and it's locked (just like 90% of new w810i out there) mine is locked to rogers and i use mp3 as ringtone.
here's how:
i really suggest trimming your mp3... u don't need a full song... call forwards to voicemail after 15-20 secs... so only use an mp3 that is 20 secs long... saves you space too...
1) download DRM packager gui from sony ericsson technical website
2) open DRM program
3) add or drag the mp3 file in the DRM window
4) (it saves new file in the same folder as the mp3 file)
5) make sure that DRM-method is "forward-lock"
6) click on create DRM content
7) new file will have a .dm extension
8) copy this .dm file in the ringtunes folder of your phone
9) go to your phone's setting and set your mp3 as the ringtune
10) start calling your own cellphone and start smiling and tell yourself... thank goodness... finally!
i hope that made sense... as i'm falling asleep...

No you don't. Or do you think I just made all of that up? Why don't you shut your fat yap and try it before you say it doesn't work? Trust me, it works. You don't need to geek out and use a DRM packager.

some branded phones dont allow mp3 files to be set as a ringtone..well you can use the procedures that they use or either debrand your phone..so you can use all mp3 as tones w/o converting them

A simple fix for phones that CANT play Mp3 is to download the Nokia PC Suite.
... Yes I KNOW this is for a SONY. don't complain yet.
Use the View Multimedia option on the main window and use this player's "save as" function to convert your Mp3/WAV etc. to .AMR .AWB or .AAC files.
The 3gp compression used by the .AMR file works fine with almost any phone. It works with my W810i that is locked to Rogers.
Just try a different file type. Don't screw with firmware if you don't know how to fix it. Many kid's PSPs and Nintendo DSs turn into Bricks.

so simple...
=connect your phone's cable to your computer's usb port
=if your pc asks you for the drivers, pop the cd that came with your phone and search the cd...
=your comp will let you knowwhen it's done installing the drivers
=your phone should ask you if you want to start file transfer
=select file transfer
=phone will turn off then on again
=your computer should recognize your phone now
=go to my computer, now you should have 2 new drives...
=select your phone (or phone's memory card if you have one)
=you can copy from your pc to phone (or memory card)
*******reminder.... not all video files play in w810i...*******
search google on what video files play and how to convert to those files.....
