When I got home from work this evening, I printed out your original instructions and followed them to the letter. It worked like a charm. Thank you very much. I really appreciate all of the work you did to figure this out for the rest of us.
It's been almost a week since I first had this problem & requested help from Nero. I still haven't heard from them. In my book, the help you have given me and others makes you a hero.
Thank you again & God Bless you.

Ref: advrcntr2.dll(This program requires the file advrcntr2.dll, which was not found on this system.)
After a good hectic time period of four days I found the solution as following. I did not got help from Nero or MS or WMP( windows media player).
I just used my logic and research my own way.
What was problem.
1. when ever I wanted to see video using windows media player it was showing error four times Nero pop up window as "This program requires the file advrcntr2.dll, which was not found on this system."
I did downloded the file and placed at program files/common files/ ahead/. But did not worked.
2. Windows media player was showing a pop up error message after the Nero pop up as To reduce the resolution of screen and and color quality setting. After doing that also nothing worked out.
How the problem started.
Recetly I purchased HP DVD player and writer HP DVD 840 and Nero OEM Suite CD came with that, it contains Nero Expres 6.00 IN CD and other programs. Some time after the update window Nero 7 pop up. I clicked and downloaded the update, but I found it was a trial version and will expire after some time.It was a trick of Nero software manufacturer. It hijacked my MS fax and picture viewer and windows media player, It changed my Adobe PDF icons. I decided to uninstall and removed the Nero 7 program. After removing It damaged the Adobe Acrobat professional( there are some plug in problems, I did not yet resolved), Windows media player stoped working totally and and advrcntr2.dll pop up problem started.
How to remove the problem
Down load the all clean tool from Nero and save it.
http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/General_CleanTool.html
Open control panel/add-remove program and delete all Nero applications.
Run Nero cleanTool twice.( select all options to remove)
then exit.
Restart the computer.
Reinstall the Nero software.
Restart the computer.
Now you will see everything works fine.
Please write me back for more comments.
I learned lot of lessons from this problem.

A fix that worked for me:
Register the DLL in question after you've copied it to your c:\program files\common files\ahead\lib folder. Make sure you are logged into your computer with administrative rights and use the command
regsvr32 c:\program files\common files\ahead\lib\advrcntr2.dll
Windows Vista note:
Now to some techies this fix might seem natural. However, I'm running on Vista Ultimate (which is -long story- what started the whole problem) so it gave me some wacked out 0x80070005 error when I ran regsvr32 on it, due to the administrative roles being restricted. Now, the regsvr32 included with Vista won't let you change its properties to "Run as Administrator." So to get around this, I hunted down a different version of regsvr32, set its properties to "Run as Administrator" then was able to successfully register the advrcntr2.dll file. Zoikes!
This all started because my OEM version of Nero 6 that came with my DVD burner was incompatible with Vista. Don't ask how I got that to work. :P

Ok..I just registered so I can tell you guys how I solved it..
The dll in question is where it should be (you will find it if you look in c:\program files\common files\ahead\lib )
Problem is it somehow becomes unregistered and regsvr32 does not find it in this folder to register it again..
So, copy it from c:\program files\common files\ahead\lib to
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and then, open run dialog from start button an enter :
regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\advrcntr2.dll
It will be registered there, and no more problems whatsoever
Hope it helps..

I recently started getting the error message about the advrcntr2.dll is missing whenever I want to watch a movie
It doesn't matter which player I use...the error message comes up relating to Nero
Because Nero was giving problems, I uninstall it, then try reinstalling, and get an error message also about 'BackitUp'
Nero then stop installing. I have install and reinstalling Nero for sometimes now w/o the problem
I have read the thread here, and followed aradhana's advice. The problem now is that the Ahead folder has been cleaned too. It's not on my computer now.
That's because I cleaned it because it had the 'BackitUp' folder in there
My ? is where would I now apply the advrcntr2.dll file?
If I install Nero, I still get the'BackitUp' error, and it will not install...etc
And if I try to watch a movie, I get the advrcntr2.dll error message.
Can someone please help? TIA

To Fix this Problem is Very Simple.
First go to DLL-Files.com Find and download advrcntr2.dll to your desk top. always run a virus scan on anything you download!
Next:open file useing rar opener then drag dll file to desk top.
Next: go to start/all programs/accessories/windows explorer/my computer/local disk (C:)/program files/nero/nero7/nero burn
Now minimize screen were you can still see the files. and desk top at the same time.
now drag and drop file into nero burn.
Close everything
and now everything is good to GOOOOOOO!

Aradhana1;
I've been tearing my hair out trying for days to understand how to fix the "advrcntr2.dll" error message. It's been preventing me from using my DVD burner and even playing my home videos, despite removing and re-loading the Nero 6 suite multiple times.
I finally saw your thread in "after dawn". It worked! Thanks!
Selfless people like yourself make the web a wonderful learning resource. I wanted to thank you privately to avoid being spammed.....the net is also a very dangerous (to one's privacy) place....
Really appreciate your sharing this fix.

I've followed the procedure from this site and NOTHING happened. So, I've clean the computer manually (all files and directions with name *nero*, then checked with register booster if there are no register problems. THEN its tstarted to work. In fact, I've received an answer from NERO in 3 days after my request.
Some info that might help:
1. As far as I understand, folder "Ahead" is created by NERO's installation...
2. Nero Clean Tool should be done after deleting all NERO files.
Good luck!

this was a frustrating problem for me- I did a search on advrcntr2.dll and found this thread at the top of the google list, so subscribed to the forum simply to post what the NERO folks told me. I basically had the same problem w/ that error (in Vista). I thought that installing Ultra Nero 8 would fix this. But alas it didnt. I wrote to their support. It took them a few days, but here is their response. Please note that I havent tried it yet as I only got their email a few min ago.
Dear Mr. XXX,
thank you for your e-mail.
To fix this problem, please proceed as follows:
1.
Windows Vista:
Delete the following folder:
C:\Users\<Username>\Local Settings\Temp
Windows XP:
Delete the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings \<Username>\Local Settings\Temp
2.
Windows Vista:
Delete the following folder:
C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Ahead
Windows XP:
Delete the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings \<Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ahead
3.
Windows Vista:
Delete the following folder:
C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Nero
Windows XP:
Delete the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nero
4.
Rename the folder "Nero" in folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\
into "Nero_2".
When reinstalling Nero, the folder "Nero" will be created again.
The Nero's DirectShow filters and Codecs will also be installed and registered again.
As soon as the folder "Nero" is once again created in the directory
C:\ Program Files\Common files\
the directory "Nero_2" can be erased.
5.
Make sure that you have your Nero 8 serial number ready.
Please proceed as follows to find your Nero 8 serial number in Nero ControlCenter:
Click "Start" in the Windows start menu.
Subsequently click the entries "All Programs"-"Nero 8?-"Nero ToolKit" ? ?Nero ControlCenter?.
-> Nero Control Center will open.
Click the "Licence" icon on the left side to see your serial number.
-> Your serial number is displayed in the window on the right.
Please write down your serial number.
Alternatively, you can also find your serial number in the Windows registry.
Please proceed as follows:
Click "Start" in the Windows start menu.
Click the "Run" command.
-> The window "Run" will open.
Enter "regedit" in the "Open" text field and click the "OK" button.
-> The registry window will open.
You will find your serial number on the left side in the navigation tree.
Simply go into the path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Nero\Installation\Families\Nero 8\Info
-> Your serial number is displayed next to the "Serial8" entry. It is structured as follows:
1K2x-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx or
2K2x-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx or
9k2x-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
Please write down your serial number.
6.
Now start uninstalling all Nero 8 applications from your computer using the Nero 8 CleanTool.
Please proceed as follows:
Download the Nero 8 CleanTool, save this file to your desktop.
http://www.nero.com/link.php?topic_id=109&gen_id=8
Unzip the ZIP-file with WinZip or WinRAR and save the content to your hard drive.
Double-click on the unzipped EXE-file to start the CleanTool.
-> The window ?Nero General Clean Tool? will open. The installed Nero version will be displayed.
Activate the checkboxes in the displayed Nero version.
Then click the ?Clean? button.
-> A status window will open.
The execution of the tool may take several minutes.
Please wait until the progress bar has moved completely to the right.
In the window ?Nero General Clean Tool? click the ?Exit? button as soon as the erasing procedure is completed.
Reboot your computer.
-> The Nero 8 CleanTool has removed all Nero entries from your computer.
7.
To install the latest Nero 8 version, please proceed as follows:
(Note: do not install a previous Nero 8 version from an installation CD now, but download and install the latest version of Nero 8 from our website. All Nero 8 download versions have the full range of functions as an original Nero 8 installation CD. There is no need to install a previous version of Nero first.)
Download and install the latest Nero 8 version from our website using the following link:
http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero8-update.php
Save this file to your desktop.
Double-click the downloaded Nero 8 installation file to start the installation.
Enter your Nero 8 serial number during the installation to make your Nero into a permanent version. (The download without a serial number is a trial version only).
-> You now have a newly installed version of Nero 8 on your computer.
8.
The folder "Nero" was created again in the directory
C:\ \Program Files\Common Files\
Folder "Nero_2" can now be erased if you haven?t already done so.
Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Jörg Munz

It's a pity Nero has become such a piece of bloatware over the years. Although it's still probably the leader in burning soft (due to its bundling with just about every burner in the world).
I use Nero, but only the Lite or Micro version.
