i was just cruising the boards and saw our post. i read somewhere (on doom9 i think) that with cdrwin and a dvd-rw, you can use cdrwin's backup routine, which, unlike other burner progs (nero, adaptec) does not filter out the "bad blocks" but leaves them right where they are. 5the bad blocks are placed in the architecture of the file format on a dvd as a copy protection. cdrwin apparently does not edit them out, thereby giving you an exact replica of your original. now, since i do not have a dvd-rw, i do not know about this, other than what i thought i read. just my 0.02

Did you ever receive an answer to your posting? I have the same issues and am looking for complete and clear instructions for newbies.

dRD you seem to be the chap with the knowledge. Here's one for you I did my enconding to get my mpeg down to 3.9g and then authored the file. The vob went back upto to 5gig. Is it authoring program or have i not decoded it correctly.

VOB size = mpeg video stream size + audio stream(s) size + subtitle(s) stream size + navigation packets.
I guess the 3.9Gb mpeg contains only the video stream.
Audio streams take the major part of the non-video streams. So did you add audio during the authoring? This could explain it, allthough 1 Gig of audio is really a lot! How did you author?

What dRD said is right, you should use Nero, the best burn software in the world, you can download the latest version "Nero Burning ROM 5.5.8.2 & SVCD_Plugin & Mp3Pro_Plugin" from the Free Download Area of *url-removed-by-webmaster-nopiracyplease*

Look people, it easy, just use smartripper to rip the dvd to the hard drive, ifoedit to strip out all the crap, extra sound, subs, copyright warnings, regions, etc. Then fix the links with ifoedit make sure it works with ifoedit, then burn back the VIDEO_TS file. Just look around for ifoedit guides.

If its still two big you need to use ReMPEG2 to resize the bitrate then remux back the m2v file using ifoedit. Once you get the hang of it, it can be done overnight.
