Quote: Sense Key: 0x04 (KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR)
Bad flash or incorrect firmware. Revert to previous firmware.
Also this must be the last 106D on the planet.. all the others I knew died with laser failure 2+ years ago.

i am running a 106D in this rig hehe... with hacked fw 108
not used it for a year...
forgot to mention go to the makers website of your motherboard and install the latest IDE drivers !
also do you have AUTORUN enabled on this drive? when a disc is loaded a box pops up asking what to do? if so disable it...
---------------------------------------------------
also i have seen this on changing dvdr type used
Sense Key: 0x04 (KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR)
try some verbatims or TY

Today I've uninstalled all traces of Nero, uninstalled drives and IDE controllers. Rebooted. Kept the firmware as it is. My motherboard is a MS-6373. I googled this and downloaded some driver which installed som Nvidia stuff. Not entirely sure if this is connected to the IDE drivers you have mentioned. Anyway I installed Nero 6 (It's the only one I've had success with) and tried to burn some DVD files. Once again I'm getting the Internal target failure error. Any ideas?

ok so you changed and tried everything except:
an ASPI layer
and different dvdrs
also have you been inside your pc recently moved cables of jumpers?
was autorun off? just check taskmanager for anything holding the drive while burning, WMP does!

ok so you changed and tried everything except:
an ASPI layer
and different dvdrs
and havent updated firmware to fix bugs and read more new type dvdrs
Downlaoaded and unzipped the ASPI layer but was unsure what to do with it.
I don't have any different DVDrs to hand at the moment.
I was under the impression that updating the firmware might not be a good idea due to the bad flash mentioned in this thread.

you can uninstall it after if you wish...
open zip file read INDEX.htm gives more info
but basically extract all files and run instaspi.bat

i thought you did put firmware in? it shows v1.08
also have you been inside your pc recently moved cables of jumpers?
was autorun off? just check taskmanager for anything holding the drive while burning, WMP does!

I think those updates I installed earlier. My PC didn't like the scan. It crashed immediately and the only way around this was to do a system restore in safe mode.
Previous to this I actually did a successful burn. I use supermarket branded discs for 2 reasons. Firstly, they're easy to get hold of and secondly, they've always worked for me. I don't know if I can name them on here so I'll just say I've been using "number one" 16X discs and they haven't burnt to the same brand. However when I tried to burn to "number two" 8X discs it worked. How can this be?

you can name brands
ok so you found a dvdr that works for you!
excellant!
dvdrs have different dye in them the burner has to like them else no go!
to find the dye mid code, use imgburn or dvd identifier or dvdinfopro
your burner is old and likes old dvdrs at 8x, new 16x dvdrs with new dye codes are harder to read, thats why firmware updates are made, but pioneer stopped at v1.08 long time back
new dvdr types need new dvdRW drives/firmware.

check the dye code off a new dvdr your useing against one from a year ago, see if the dye codeing is the same, i bet it isnt, brand name of say XXX means nothing, that XXX brand could use 5 different dyes, discs look the same from same shop, but underneath there not!
since my pioneer 106D got to v1.08 i bought and went for lite-on drives...
so not sure with pioneer these days but i would recommend lite-on.
pioneers dont booktype i dont think, but if that isnt needed for you fine...
i use VERBATIM DVD-R 16x with TY dye coding i buy from here for years they state the code on the site before you buy!
