I had the same problem BUT now I'm burning first time, evry time with DVDSHRINK and Nero [which sucks btw] on my NEC ND1300 drive!!!!!

I tried the following

1 Changed media - the usual advice NO DIFFERENCE!!!!

2 I made my DVD the MASTER on my secondary IDE and removed the HD I had as secondary master - now have Primary Master HD and Secondary Master DVD drive
SOME DIFFERENCE - bit hit and miss with writing but definitley faster!!!

3 I uninstalled ROXIO and every other piece of burning software IT WORKS!!!!!!!!! Roxio offers too many conflicts so be sure to clean out the Registry after removal, then reinstall Nero [I'm using 6.0.0.9]

The NEC drive we have is perhaps the most stable of all the drives I have seen / used - media is not an issue.
