Dermotk,
I?m at the end of my rope on this one.. Are you sure you don?t have a Recovery partition on your HD? Usually activate it at boot up by holding F11?.
Do you have a friend that has a XP cd?

2oldgeek,
yes i have a reinstallation cd i got from dell when i purchased the pc,
i was checking the owners manual and it states to use Dell PC Restore by Symantec only as the last resort to restore your operating system to as it was when you purchased the computer, is this method different to what you are talking about.

That?s perfect.. Make some backups of the data files, pix, etc. that you want to keep but NOT the applications (programs) because they can be infected? Then use your backup cd.
That will put it back to just like it came and then you?ll have to reinstall all the programs you use. Not fun at all but it will give you a great big understanding of why my 3 rules of computing are 1. backup, 2. backup and 3. backup : )
I use Acronis True Image but there are some free imaging programs out there. Acronis costs but it is the Best.. IMHO
Luck be with you?
If you need to ask something, I?ll be here.

It's only different in that using the pc's onboard recovery options will install your pc back to the same state as when you bought it,if you have a working recovery option use it.Once it's all done there should be an option in your all programs list to create a recovery set of disks,do it,but use good quality media as the verification is not a good way to know if there are errors on the newly created recovery disks.
If you use a xp cd i would recommend do a repair for starters, because if you do a destructive reformat you won't be able to save your recovery partition,it would be better to repair then create recovery disks then after that use the xp cd to do a full destructive recovery i.e reformat
@ geek
Regarding using an xp cd to reinstall (full reformat only) from a friend i'm not so sure that will work if your thinking of using the original computers serial key on his friends xp cd,as it will be a manufacturers OEM install, i'm pretty sure the keys are different from retail OEM disks,it would be best to contact microsoft before hand to be sure as a reformat will remove the pc's activated key from the hdd
Regarding future security anitvirus with spy scanners
Avast,Avg free versions
for firewall,it also has anitvirus scanner etc & is two way with stealth ports, any program that attempts to install will activate a popup, but unlike some firewalls it has an option to switch to install mode,it avoids having popups very time a write happens
Comodo
Back to topic starter
If you really need to surf porn sites :p use returnil,it's free virtualization software, kinda like using a live cd except from within windows.

Hey scorpNZ, I know you. You?re that Guy who likes to try to read between the lines, analyze it and then type a really long synopsis of what you perceive. ; ) lol
Quote: Do you have a friend that has a XP cd?
Please don?t read too much into this as I do not condone piracy. But if an XP cd was available, it could be used to check the Windows System Files and replace one if it were corrupted?.
Cheers,
OG
p.s. I agree with MOST of the rest.. I also use Returnil because I have an extreanly large HOST File and it's the only way I can get on the Porn sites and not leave traces for the wife to find..... hehehe

Hey, dermotk!!!
Gee, I feel so bad about not being able to cure your problem that I ate a whole bottle of Ginko Baloba or what ever that stuff if that makes this old mind open up?. ; )
If you haven?t started reformatting yet? STOP!
Place the CD, that contains the operating system and came with your computer, in the drive.
Then:
Go to -> Start -> Run
Type or copy the following line in the box:
SFC /scannow
Click OK
This will take quite a while. It will scan your operating system and check the files to make sure they are in the original condition. If they are corrupt it will look for a good one on the CD and replace the bad one..
Hopefully, this will save you the trouble of reformatting your drive and having to install all those programs..
Let me know???.
I had thought of this when I asked you if you had a friend with a CD but I?m OLD and things are starting to slip somewhat? : p

dermotk,
HOORAY!!!
I am so happy. : )
I always feel so bad if I am unable to help someone and they have to resort to a reformat/reinstall. : (
This was giving me a bad Whoopin, lol, and I nearly lost you. This was my plan when I asked if you had a system disk but, that night I was very tired and was working too many threads to be able to keep up. I?m just getting too old to be trying to handle more than 1 or 2 threads at a time.. ; )
Please send me a fresh HJT log and we?ll see if you have anything else that needs attention..
Also you might want to run SUPERAntiSpyware and post that Log also?
Thanks,
2OG

dermotk,
Well, you?ve been down the road, buddy.
Most of what I see in this Log is just traces. But, there are still signs of a Trojan.
Let?s see if we can boot it out before it returns to haunt you.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
? Restart your computer
? After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
? Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
? Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
? Choose your usual account.
? Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
? Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
? It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
? Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
? When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
? Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
? Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new Hijack This log
It?s a fight to the end.. I?m in a little better shape tonight, so maybe I won?t miss anything. ; )

Hey dermotk,
Well, we?re getting there, that picked up one Trojan I saw but missed the other.
Time for the Big Guns, I guess?
dermotk, I will be working Thru Sunday morning and may not get a chance to get back to you until Sunday night or Monday but I want you to run the following:
First ? Set a Restore point ? Just in case : ) lol
Then:
Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
? Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
? When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
That should take anything out that?s left over and, when I get back, I will use ComboFix to clean up the traces.
Looking Almost Done ; )

Hey dermotk,
Well, I almost missed the boat on your missing Driver, but we got it.. ; )
At first glance, every thing looks very good. As I said, I may not have a chance to look it over real deep until maybe Sunday and then I?ll let you know. Until then, you?re good to go?. I can see nothing that is bad just a few traces, maybe..
I?ll get back to you and let you know..

Hey Hey Hey dermotk,
I love it when a plan comes together? I will not be defeated by no stupid malware, etc.
As far as I can tell your computer is as clean as an Old Maid?s Parlor..
A little dust on the picture of PAPA? but, what the hey?
You can dust it by fixing these 2 lines with HJT.. They are just starters for files that no longer exist and do no harm.

The problem that you were having with your internet connection, get this:
I also had connection problems with my internet connection until I turned my firewall off ( ZoneAlarm, sound familiar? )
Then I received the following e-mail from ZoneAlarm:
Quote: Workaround to Sudden Loss of Internet Access Problem
Date Published : 8 July 2008
Date Last Revised : 9 July 2008
Overview : Microsoft Update KB951748 is known to cause loss of internet access for ZoneAlarm users on Windows XP/2000. Windows Vista users are not affected.
Impact : Sudden loss of internet access
Platforms Affected : ZoneAlarm Free, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware, and ZoneAlarm Security Suite
Recommended Actions -
Download and install the latest versions which solve the loss of internet access problem here (English only):
? ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite
? ZoneAlarm Pro
? ZoneAlarm Antivirus
? ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware
? ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall
- or follow the directions below.
Option 1: Move Internet Zone slider to Medium
1. Navigate to the "ZoneAlarm Firewall" panel
2. Click on the "Firewall" tab
3. Move the "Internet Zone" slider to medium
Option 2: Uninstall the hotfix
1. Click the "Start Menu"
2. Click "Control Panel", or click "Settings" then "Control Panel"
3. Click on "Add or Remove Programs"
4. On the top of the add/remove programs dialog box, you should see a checkbox that says "show updates". Select this checkbox
5. Scroll down until you see "Security update for Windows (KB951748)"
6. Click "Remove" to uninstall the hotfix
He He, Maybe we found another Workaround????? -> SFC
The following is a canned speech that I issue to the victims of malware after they are clean:
Congratulations, your log looks CLEAN
There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:
1. Time for some housekeeping
Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer
? Save it to your desktop.
? Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
? Click the Cleanup button.
? The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.
2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
3. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.
The easiest and safest way to do this is:
? Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
? Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
? Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
? Click "OK".
? Click the "More Options" Tab.
? Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
4. Defragment your Hard Drive
1.Open My Computer.
2.Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3.On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4.Click Defragment.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:
It is critical that you use a firewall to protect your computer from hackers. We don't recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions. Two good ones are are ZoneAlarm Free and Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall has a "free mode" as well.
I personally use and recommend ZoneAlarm..
Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.
I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
? Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Go to these sites and read about these you may decide to use them, I do, because they work.
? Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Malware, Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
? MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know Malware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
Read further in the above thread, tashi gives some good advice and also how to become a Malware Collector. A little humor never hurts.. : )
I also recommend using Firefox instead of IE, it?s safer. If you continue to use IE, at least upgrade to IE7, it?s safer than IE6.
Watch what you download with your BitComet, P2P is a crap shoot at best..LOL
dermotk, I will leave this thread open so, if you have questions, just give me a big HOLLER!
?A clean computer is a Happy Computer? ; )
It?s been a pleasure to work with you dermotk, sorry it took me so long to figure that internet problem out. : (

dermotk,
Here is some useful information. Links to free software. Hints, Tips, Tools, Etc..
Use the Secunia Software Inspector to check for out of date software.
? Click Start Now
? Check the box next to Enable thorough system inspection.
? Click Start
? Allow the scan to finish and scroll down to see if any updates are needed.
? Update anything listed.
.
----------
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date and run scans with them regularly. Once or twice a week minimum.
Another thing I would suggest installing SiteAdvisor. SiteAdvisor rates sites on business practices and spam.
Check out Keeping Yourself Safe On The Web for tips and free tools to keep you safe in the future.
Also see Slow Computer? It May Not Be Malware for free cleaning/maintenance tools to help keep your computer running smooth.
