While Sony is a top tier in the HDTV market, Samsung is usually right on par and sometimes even better than the Sony. It all depends on the model/series.

I was going to buy Samsung LN52A650 LCD, but the red color was a total deal breaker for me.)
Samsung/Sony are both great LCD brands.
I highly suggest checking out Toshiba's REGZA line.
Also look at Sharp's newer models. (Their old models were plagued with banding issues which has give them a bit of a bad reputation)
LG is pretty good too and actually provides ALOT of other brands with their LCD panels.
At the end of the day unless youre a total video snob all of these are going to look great to you!
Yup, most of their LCDs are manufactured by Samsung.

I don't doubt that Samsung is a great brand and a reliable manufacturer. However when I was at the local Fry's this weekend, all of their return LCD and big screen TVs (I mean all but one Sony and a few Sharp) were Samsung. They were stacked up three layers deep in front of the warehouse. What gives ??

they were probably able to invest in more screens if they bought samsung then if they were to buy a more expensive brand.
if they buy really cheap, people won't bother, if they buy really expensive, the shop and the consumer has to have money so i think they went for the middle.
let's face the truth people. if money was no object, which one would you get? sony or samsung?

I'd go for Sony if only for sentimental reasons :)
My original point was that if Samsung was a great product, why were so many of those RETURNED by customers as compared to other brands?

Samsung makes excellent tv's. Who knows why they were returned. Could be that the customers couldn't figure out how to operate their tv's - some people are plain stupid. Could have been that they found a better deal somewhere, who knows.
Are you sure you weren't looking at the over stock? They do have tv's piled up all through out the store you know.

These two sentences contain two major points. I agree with both. :)
I've always like the quality of Samsung tv.s, among other things they make.

my opinion is that samsung is a decent brand, if not, one of the best. but i would actually go for sony because of their technologies such as bravia. other companies don't put technology into their products so i think this is what makes sony stand out. besides this, i would get samsung or another brand. i strongly agree with Dragula96 on his harsh but true opinion regarding simple minded consumers. then again, the people at the other end of customer service calls are usually simple minded to deal with simple minded consumers. must be an easy job.

Those were indeed open box returned items and they were piled up in front of the warehouse.
That said, I still think Samsung is one of the more reliable brands out there.

What? How does Samsung, or any other tv manufacturer for that matter, not put tech into their products? What about Sharp, Toshiba, and Mitsubishi? They are all innovative companies that also make excellent products. Now as far as makers like Dynex, Westinghouse, ViewSonic, and Sceptre go, they don't seem to be on the leading edge.
Samsung was one of the first to come out with 120Hz sets. Samsung's LED DLP's have some pretty impressive picture quality IMO. What about Samsung's 3D-HD? And lets not forget about Mitsubishi's new line of tv's - LaserVue.

dragula96, when i said technology, i meant things which other companies CAN'T use because it's exclusive to that company. i am aware that bravia is colour enriching and perhaps samsung has its own too, i never said it didn't. i was just referring to the most common cases. let's take another product as an example, phones. sony have put techs such as mega bass. i haven't heard of a samsung tech for phones.
as for 120hz, that's not a tech, that's just a lead in refresh rate which all manufacturers can use.
i think samsung is great, i'm not disrespecting samsung they make quality.

Those were all open box returns. If it were the day after the Super Bowl, I can understand the large return volume from those cheap skates :)

Man, have you lost your marbles or what? How is designing a tv with 120Hz refresh rate not tech? And if you are referring to "tech" as in, only tech you find in a certain tv series, well that's not entirely true either. They just coin that technology with their own name. Other tv manufacturers come out with the same tech, but call it something different.
Lets take HDMI-CEC for example. Those are all new techs put into tv's, but each manufacturer has it's own "coined" name for it. Like LG's "SimpleLink", Panasonic's "EZ Sync", Sony BRAVIA's "Theatre Sync", Samsung's "Anynet", and Toshiba?s "CE-Link".
Read that article my friend, then come talk to me.

Let's face it, Sony makes nice tv's, but I'd never buy one. If I had to choose another tv, I'd buy a bigger Samsung LCD, Bigger Samsung LED DLP or the new Mitsubishi LaserVue line. Sony is evil, don't give into those bastards!

By the way, we are talking about tv's, not phones.

I bought an LG 42" plasma about three years ago, had 12 month warranty on it. When it was 13 months old, the plasma went leaving 2 big black lines running down the screen. Couldn't watch it at all.
Had terrible trouble getting the shop and LG to admit any liability because it was just out of warranty, even though under the sale of goods act it wasn't up to standard, you would expect a 2000 euro tv to last longer than 13 months.
Anyway eventually after about 3 months of me harrassing them they agreed to replace it with a new model, and i bought an extended 5 year warranty for it.
After this i definitely wouldnt recommend LG to anyone. My new tv is doing fine and is over two years old now, but they were just a nightmare to deal with, and really couldnt have cared less.

Yea, I wouldn't have bought a plasma by LG. Only line I'd roll with is a Pioneer or Panasonic.
