Ya C4, I am new to this =) I'm not a computer guy, I'm a GM tech. I learn more and more about computers as I play around. However, I did realize what he meant then-he meant start a bootleg or homemade disc just by putting it in an xbox with a modified bios.
Checking out the link now. AR DOWNLOAD!!!
And thats why people ask these questions again and again. This all organized chaos. I can't tell you how many tutorials i wqs following and I didnt see mention of that last link with all the necessary software. Things should be cut/edited/placed together to save room on the site and also make things convenient for the searcher and the "use the search feature!"-guy.

Things are easy to find and quite organised. If it seems messy or disorganised it's because there are always endless threads/questions on the same subjects :)
..the best we can do is close all the duplicate threads and point people towards the main threads but it's an ongoing battle.
I was an xboxnoob just over a year ago, i found all the answers/tutorials i needed by following a few 'sticky' threads by chunkhead

CREAKY-I am by no means saying that you mods do a bad job. I know it's tough, and I applaud you for the efforts you put in to play catchup/cleanup. This has always been a fantastic forum, and you have provided me with info times before. For all your work I thank you.
The mod sems quite simple, but I just want to have everything ready and make sure I haven't missed anything. I have searched thru Head's tuts before also. I'm just antsy and can't wait to do this. It should be much easier than the DIY projector. This weekend should be very productive! =)

No worries, hope you saw i put a smiley in my previous reply.
I have a couple of chipped xboxes, though i bought them that way, i only have a little idea how to actually fit them and set them up.
Anyways, i haven't hardly used the one chipped box, i softmodded it ages ago the lazy way (i just ftp'd XBMC over to it then pointed the existing dash (Evox or Avalaunch, can't remember) to the new XBMC folder. Job done, and that xbox is only ever used (infrequently) for watching movies on. The other chipped box gets used a lot more, i did the same thing with XBMC btw. This xbox is a pain in the behind at the best of times (it's used for games and for movies). It sometimes hangs when i try to start XBMC, and it's finicky with emulators and sometimes with games too. Basically it's a pain in the arse, in fact once it crapped out altogether and i had to figure out how to reflash the BIOS (it's the proverbial Xecuter 2.6 with the pretty lights on the little BIOS triple switch gizmo attached to the front of the xbox).
So for me, chipped boxes have so far been a pain. I much prefer softmodding a standard xbox personally. It's dead easy and it just works.
Here's my notes i added to one of chunkhead's tut's, my step by step notes on my first attempt at softmodding back last November when i was a complete noob to xboxes - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/557450 (and see the comment at the end of that post for details of the latest vesrions of Auto Installer Deluxe).
It took an entire night to setup my first xbox but it paid off, now it takes all of half hour.
As to adding huge hard drives to xboxes, i've done the following -
Main xbox has a 500GB drive jam-packed with many games and a few music albums.
The main kids xbox has a 250GB drive in, with loads of games and a few music albums. This xbox also goes on holiday with us, and what i'll do next time we go away is to dig out the car inverter i'd bought and then the xbox can be used for the actual car journeys (normally we just use the xbox in the chalet or whatever we stay in).
For other xboxes i tend to leave the original hard drives in and use them for purely XBMC use as all my movies and music lives on my main pc, accessible by all xboxes around the house.
I keep ALL my xbox games on a 500GB USB2.0 hard drive on the pc, that way if ever one of wants a particular game we don't have to go searching thru 100s of game dvd's, we just ftp over that particular game.

I did see the smiley; just wanted to clarify and give credit where due.
I have to order a disc drive(as far as I can tell) or try one of the repairs for it, but I don't think that will affect me trying to start tonight.
The networking actually brings up another question. I think I'm correct though. If I have pc-a in office, to watch a movie from it on tv-a, pc-a needs to be on. Also, if watching something on tv-a from pc-a, tv-b cannot watch something from it, correct? I would have to DL what I wanted to watch on tv-a and then let tv-b DL something from pc-a....?
I have a router that has 2 usb ports to expand storage on network. I was thinking of putting an xbox on ea tv and connecting HDD to router....basically doing the steps above for 2 tv's to watch something.

Yeah the obvious downside to having media on a pc and not on an xbox is that the pc has to be on. This is why i was recently researching the possibilities of buying a NAS unit of some sort, i guessed i'd want a minimum of 4GB capacity as anything over 4GB is very expensive. I gave the idea up though as units such as that use the same amount of electricity as a pc.
So the idea of keeping media on an actual xbox hard drive is very attractive.
As to accessing media from a pc or from more than 1 pc, you can quite happily access media on the same pc via more than one xbox, the files are shared from a pc using Samba shares so basically the shares can be accessed from any pc's/xboxes on your network.
edit- some routers do indeed have USB support but i'm pretty sure this only really means USB sticks and not actual hard drives in external enclosures.

HA, guess I'll be putting off a NAS system for now as well. I'd prefer to makes something that runs the least amt of electricity as possible. And only 4GB of space?! I wonder how it would work to have your pc setup to a whole house remote and trun it on from the living room, DL content, then turn it off with remote and watch tv....?
I understand you can DL from any xbox to one pc like you have setup, but can u watch a movie while your kid is playing a game? I assume you have to DL each item to your current xbox 1st. I have to get this setup 1st, then setup the FTP.
I was afraid you'd say that about the router . I'm gonna have to check, but I'll bet that's all it will do.

Doh!, good point you made about the xbox playing a game, i'd overlooked that one, you won't be able to access anything on that xbox whilst it's playing a game.

Oh, I see what you're saying. You can't be playing a game while someone or you wants to look at something else on the XBOX.
I was asking if your central PC could stream to 2 xbox's at one time, i.e.-your kid streaming a game from the pc to his xbox and you and the wife watching a movie in another room but being streamed from the same pc. I'd imagine you would have to FTP your movie, and he would have to wait 5 min for you to finish so he could then DL his game from the pc...?

The largest drive that's IDE is 750 if my memory serves tho IDE is dearer than SATA,you have to be aware you'll need an adaptor if you go 1 tet or for any SATA type drive & use the slim adaptor,it does'nt matter if you install a 500 IDE only to find later it's too small as you can remove it & use in a comp or externally & ya can never have to many hdd's..lmao..tho comments here have made me think about setting up a server sometime in the future, but that's for another topic.
When wired correctly the extender can be turned on by remote,i would'nt know tho as mine has'nt been enabled grrr(means i have to get up to switch to the other drives),once running it can switch to another drive by pushing or perhaps remote selecting one of the other buttons,it will then power down & restart on that drive, regardless of setup the xbox is bloody brilliant *all hail xbox*
Once xbmc is up & running,on mine there's two largest partitions setup F & G.
Inside there's a folder MOVIES or more than one i.e: movies, games, pictures, apps, anyway all the movies are held in the MOVIE folder & inside a sub folder named whatever the name of the movie is along with a jpg of cover art & any other info you want in there, including a text file & description just like what you would see on the reverse side of a video,(text file will get displayed when selecting whatever it is that displays it..lol..),yeah anyway you'll now be able to scroll the list in any type of way, either list or scroll sideways in numerous sizes,or as tiles etc, you'll see once you get there,so if you want catagories you'll need to create a "TV Series" folder & plonk all the tv stuff in there,if they are seasons, each season in it's own folder, like wise ACTION movies will be held in subfolders inside the ACTION folder etc, that's how xbmc works on mine otherwise you'll just have to scroll each icon until you find what you want,oh yeah xlink can be accessed from the settings menu if you enable it.
Hey C4RN1 you still here
What are the partiton formats that get used, since i did'nt create them are they fat,fat16,ntfs,ext2 or ext 3,i assume a setup disk is used from the xbox dvd drive to make those multiple partitions or does the xbox hdd get setup from the comp
cheers
ps: all i need to know is format used & whether from setup disk or from comp

a central pc could be ftp-ing to 2 different xboxes, or to the same xbox, 2 different sets of data, yes. Just in case you didn't know, you can't play a game over the network, games have to be installed on and xbox and run from the xbox. You can install a game to an xbox via ftp (provided it's been properly installed or ripped via the program dvd2box previously and then ftp'd to a pc).

well, decided to take gf's personal laptop apart last night to look for an alleged desoldered power port or LVC14A chip. Didn't find anything.
I know the Dell Inspiron 1150 has problems with these. I can't see paying $100-300 for a new MOBO when a new laptop could just cost $400.
XBOX THIS WEEKEND THOUGH....I hope =)

The xbox uses FATX format. I guess you could think of it as FATX16 and FATX32. Use the auto intaller deluxe disc to format the drives and it will automatically format it with 32k clusters if it's over 137gb.

I do remember reading somewhere that someone put in a 750, but that may have been when 1TB was not readily available....? Also, not sure if you had to upgrade anything else. I wouldn't imagine so.
As for the adaptor, I plan to stick with IDE anyway.
The extender you mentioned, which I think I linked to one, seems a bit high priced. What is actually inside it? Someone mentioned trying to just build one.

@C4RN1
Cheers
Ideally they should be under 50 American as there's nothing to them, now that i've seen them in bits,i'll see if i can find the tut for them, there will be issues as you'll need the extender nuts, well not nuts really just hex tubing about 3" long with thread cut inside one end & a stud at the other ,so that the original screws can be re used to attach the top & bottom covers of the xbox, then you'll need to make the front & back panels & perhaps the side panels tho the sides are unnecessary i spose, you'll also need a long length of IDE ribbon & clamps or join two IDE's togeather including making your own power cables for each hdd, yeah there's a bit to it now that i think about it,i'll post back later assuming i find the link
Any of the ribbon or power connectors can be sourced from local comp repair, they'll have a stack of stuffed power supplies & that takes care of power connectors as they're already made.
The three little buttons you see on the front panel of extender is nothing more than a power cable that runs power to turn on hdd just like a light switch in a house,so if you use say a dial type switch, the first clik would be 1st hdd,2nd clik 2nd hdd etc,so the original power button is still used but you need a selector switch to select whatever drive
Here's a pik of what parts, noth'n to em,the side bits have those cut outs, the white thing in main view is a U shaped alluminium bracket that holds the two hdd's

Anyone ever see a USB cable with these wire colors?:
Green, Red, Brown, Yellow
Gave up searching. Finally found a very cheapo $3-5 meter and ohmed the pins. USB FEMALE PINOUT(pins facing up, white piece at base,L->R):
1-Red, 2-Brn, 3-Yel, 4-Grn
Oddest USB I've seen!

Tried my old PNY Attache' 256MB Flash drive, but realiized it was on the "incompatible list" afterward. I cleaned the snow off the truck and went to circuit city for a ScanDisk Cruzer Micro 4GB. The problem is, I plugged it in as soon as I took it out of the package, but it tells me it's damaged as well. Any idea what I need to do to get it to work?
DOH-forget the part in the parenthesis:
SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4GB Flash (reformatted with gparted with 3 partitions; 512MB FAT32, 3GB EXT3, 384MB SWAP)
The cruzer micro on the compatible list was a 256. I figured this would work as well. My GF has a Sandisk Cruzer 2GB, but the list on our USB softmod link says it wont work, but the WIKI list says yes...?!
And this link says it's compatible, although maybe because I have a micro:
http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/xbox-har...tible-xbmc.html
There must be a how-to on formatting some of these....?

Trying to use GParted to partition the USB. I dowloaded it here:
http://www.download.com/GParted-LiveCD/3....html?tag=mncol
and used IZArc to extract, but I'm not sure what to extract where or what to click on to actually run the program? Or, do I just put it on a cd and stick it back into my pc?
EDIT:found another drive that may just work. I'm stuck at the part of copying the game saves to AR. Says one is not "a valid game save".
My truck died on the way to a friends bday party so I'm gonna go look at that now that it's not snowing....

Creaky-any thoughts on using the reg memory card in a controller hooked to the pc...?
EDIT-ok CREAKY, I just soldered the usb end to the xbox controller and plugged it in to the pc-no luck. Looks like I need a program to make that work. However, I think there is a way to put the files I'm trying to save onto an XBOX memory card from a modded xbox. If that's possible, could I send you one and ask you to save them to it for me?
PM me if interested and we can work something out.

Nice one. Easy when you know how :)
Here's the best place to get AID from - http://www.aidtracker.com - there's a healthy amount of seeds & peers so it shouldn't take too long.
I was happy enough with the XBMC provided by AID 4.30 but i recently got hold of 4.40 so rolled out the new XBMC (Atlantis) across all my machines. There's also Atlantis via Windows too, very impressed with it so far, both on xbox and Windows - http://xbmc.org/download/ - it takes all of 2 minutes to install and the only thing i've had to configure is the default region ie UK, the Weather page and an SMB network source.
Quote: Auto-Installer Deluxe v4.40
Release Notes:
--------------
Just in time for Christmas, here is the latest up-to-date Full ISO Release of Auto-Installer Deluxe. There has been quite a few additions since the last ISO Build (4.30), so it's definately worth updating to this version.
Xbox Media Center (XBMC) is updated to 2008-12-07 (which is the first SVN Build after the Atlantis Final), and the XBMC Skins and Scripts are up to date.
Merry Christmas from the AID Team. :)
I often check back at the aidtracker site as they tend to retire the older versions after a while.
You can get bleeding edge versions of XBMC by T3CH but i didn't have any luck with the last one i tried by them, plus i prefer to have stuff that's stable as opposed to bleeding edge, i think they release a new version every week or so. I like to actually use XBMC as opposed to spending my time installing never ending versions :)

I currently have xbox with a 320 gig hard drive installed with xbmc and bunch of NES roms installed.
Hooking up Xbox with xbmc to HDTV with component cables is the best decision I have ever made. Storing movies on the HD is much less expensive and saves energy when playing movies.
If you want a badass skin, go to www.aeoncentral.com. It is an awesome front end for xbmc.

I got AID installed, but I have to figure out what each program does before I decide what all I'm going to install. I also have to put the TB drive in. I just haven't had a moment to do so in all this time.
I also want to figure out how to link it to with IMDB or something like the Collectorz program.
In time, in time....
