Would that not cause it to overheat. I was thinking more like a box with vent holes in it.

Actually under heavy load they get very hot indeed. Some USB wireless adapters are prone to crashing systems when they overheat.

The adapter that I have has vent holes in it, and it does get a little warm. But I'm not talking about the adapter I'm talking about this http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/WGA600N.

I had to run a usb cable outside and put the adapter in a glass jar to keep it out of the weather. But I would still like to go wireless so I can have multiple computers online at one time. I don't really like haveing to drag a usb cable around, but it will do for now. Just want to thank everyone for there info and help. If anyone has any more info on how I can go wireless cheaply please post.

if you have a old router and your not afraid to mess with some firmware flashing you can use a firmware by the name of dd-wrt, just google it they have a full list of supported routers, and directions on how to flash the firmware, the whole thing allows you to control the firmware more extensively with linux, will allow you to increase the miliwatts to the radio chip = more range and power, or you can use it as a repeater, full instructions are on the website
