Quote: HP I believe is a common IBM clone (not certain),but compaq ia totally proprietary
Isnt compaq owned by HP? :)
Quote: Praetor, that is some pricy photo equipment. Not exactly the gear of the regular hobbyist. But you get what you pay for. Man o man. I'm happy to have my FD Mavica.
Dude I have no idea about jack about photography ... I just take the shots and process them :P (let's not get too far off topic ;-))

Compaq has a unique history. when IBM first began to build personal computers they engineered a circuit design that directed all others (IBM clones). Later the developers of compaq brought in a engineers who were given a set of criteria that directed them to design a computer based on a specific criteria. What they weren't told was that the said criteria was based on the IBM design. The engineeres effectively without knowing it reversed engineered the IBM. They achieved the same outcome but with a completely different design. Works like the IBM but almost as totally and almost as proprietary as an Apple PC. HP's and Compaq's recent history is the result of an acquisition.

LOL so was I so no worries (this little niche of the forum is currently devoid of offtopic posting, multiposting and other general stupidities -- and since I'm gonna be the 'guardian mod' here, its gonna stay that way :P -- a fun, mature, informative place to chat).
Anyways, back on topic, Auslander, what connections do you have available? If you are dealing with an older machine (or anythign but Dell's extreme top end systems), unless you have aftermarket modifications, you'll be dealing with PATA drives (which allows you to meet the size requirements). Now if you've got on of them newer systems, you'll have the luxury of SATA (which conveniently allows you to meet your speed requirements) and if you put the time/money into getting SCSI then you can easily meet your speed requirements).
I think its quite safe to say that the only drives that are in the 20GB class are ATA (5400rpm most likely and maybe 7200rpm but i doubt it). If you goto the 30GB class then you can easily find cheap 7200rpm ATA drives and 10K SATA drives for a higher price).

Speed and bulk come together with Hitachi's new 300GB 10,000 rpm SATA hard drive. Fat and fast :) Too bad they're an enterprise drive, hard to get for most I imagine.

Auslander, if you have not been driven off, start feeding the experts (not me) some specs on your current box. Your stated goals are speed & small disk size ( Now days). What you can afford to spend would be nice info also. Where you live can also play a part in any recomnedations, as far as acquiring what you want within your budget.

I wouldn't want to F*ck any of the Kerry's. I've got some standards

auslander,
I tried a preliminary search on your system (hp pavillion 700n). All I get back so far is lap top stuff. Is it a lap top?

Ooops my bad ... so I cant read... big deal :P
Ya well for that budget I think Nephilim nailed it right on the dot -- of course requiring a 10K or 15K drive did limit our selection a lot :)
