I think you should go for the barton 3200.
If you take a look at Praetors specs you'll note that he has a XP2500 Barton running at XP3200 specs. I have one at home doing the same. The difference in price is about $110-120 which is equal to a stick of memory, a 120 gig hard disk, faster video card, or spread around and improve a couple of components.

Exactly but even if that's not the route chosen, it just goes to show that you can get a fairly decentup for the sub-$600 range :P

Let's see here, budget conscious, no PCI-X...
Athlon64-2800 (512k)
Asus K8V (754) Via K8T800
512MB PC3200
80GB WD 7200/8MB
NEC Dual-Layer Burner
ATI Radeon 9600XT
Antec Sonata case, 2x120mm (1 incl.)

It can't just be budget-conscious; it's gotta be Dream Machine too! What am I missing?
I would like this type of A64 system for myself...
Single most expensive piece listed is: CPU
Praetor what's up with this 'Socket 754' - is it gonna stick around or is it just passin' through?

Maybe a sound card? ('course I didnt spec one either :P) ... just something worth mentioning.

Unless i'm horribly mistaken, Socket754 has come and gone. S754 was the initial inception of the consumer A64 line and was followed by the Socket940 which was drawn from the server line. It has since been finalized to Socket939 for consumers and Socket940 for commercial applications :)

Yeah that's what I thought I'd heard, somewhere on the outskirts of my (pathetic) memory...
Good old SocketA has been a solid standard, for years now - very comfortable.
So what; you wouldn't touch the 754 or whaddya think?
OnBoard sound is fairly good now, my ABit is great with the NVIDIA SoundStorm setup.
We don't have to spec NICs either (life is good!)

Dunno ... i'd prolly switch to a Socket754 to replace my XP2500 here but thats only if its ridiculously cheap or better yet, free. If i had to pay my own money for it ... probably not. Of course, in the context of a budget machine, if the Socket754s can be had, it makes for a better machine than the AthlonXPs (provided the budgets are roughly equal)

My budget secret to building since 97, wait until the current best is facing obsolescence, then pick them up for a song and tweak the hell out of them.

Kamran I have a nice AMD Athlon 550 on Asus K7V (Slot A) that is in your price range ($300 CDN = 120 Pounds)
But you're in the wrong forum with those prices :-)

Mobo
ECS K7S5A Pro (35) or ASUS A7V8X-X (35)
The ASUS is lightyears better however you'll be able to haggle the price down on the ECS much easier
VIDEO
TNT2 32MB (17)
Radeon9200SE 128MB(27)
GFX5200 256MB (38)
I guess it depends on what your needs are .. u can most likely nail the price for the decrepit TNT2 down
CPU
Palomino 2000+ (42)
TBredA 2200+ (47)
Barton2500+ (53)
The Barton is the best one there however it'll only be working at full capacity on the ASUS board, also the Palo and TBredA you can prolly haggle down easily.
HDD
40GB 2MB 7200 (33)
80GB 2MB 7200 (38)
You can probably drop the price on the 40GB
All prices based on 0.423/2.364 exchange rate CAD-GBP and done with very little research lol (i just called up a couple stores and checked really, nothing fancy)

Well what started as me just wanting to OC my processor has turned into an overhaul, after finding out my 1800XP palomino isnt the best to OC. I am making several changes and wanted some input as far as what some of you think.
Existing parts to be reused:
Western Digital 80GB 7200rpm ATA133 HDD (cache unknown)
Samsung SM-325B CDRW/DVD-ROM
I/O MAGIC IDVDRW8D Dual format 8x DVDR/RW
MSI GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB w/ 8x AGP
Volcano 11+ HSF
512MB DDR2700 single stick of i guess "stock" ram
New Parts to be used:
Processor AMD Athlon 2500+ XP Barton core
Mobo ASUS A7N8X-X w/ Nvidia nforce2 chipset
case http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=11-156-140&DEPA=1
Not sure on that case, just like the wicked look of it ;). If anyone has a better idea on a case let me know. I am looking for something to cool better than the piece of crap I got now, and would like to use the PSU that comes w/ it to keep costs down. I am open to suggestions.
My biggest question here is this. I do play games occasionally, but mostly older stuff like Counter-Strike. My main use of this PC is backing up DVDs and web surfing.
Which of these should I get with the remaining roughly 120 USD, I have left?
1. Nvidia FX5700 128mb Video card
2. Radeon 9800SE 128mb Video card
3. OCZ Enhanced Latency Series Dual Channel Platinum 256x2 DDR PC-3200
4. Maxtor 160gb 7200rpm 8mb IDE HDD

My 2500 barton and a A7N8X are on the way. I still haven't ordered a case, and would love suggestions on that. Also I am still up in the air on which of the other upgrades I should get first. Any help is appreciated.

Hey!
If your going with Intel based chipsets the P4P800 is the better choice for straight performance. It's based on the 865PE MCH and the ICH5. The 865PE will handle 800fsb speeds with ease.
The P4P8-X is based on the older 865P MCH and will only handle 800mhz fsb speed when overclocked.
As Praetor suggested the P4P800 is well worth the extra cabbage.
The other great feature of both these boards is that they support Intel's 478pin socket. When I first bought the 800deluxe I was low on cash and dropped a 2.6ghz Celleron for 115 bucks. When I had enough cash I dropped a 3.0ghz P4. This board will also support the Prescott.
Because of the great flexibility, I opted for the PC 3200. It wont reach it's full potential with a Celleron but when the P4 drops she screams!!!!
