Well, thanks to you guys, I now (1) understand my computer better and (2) have 105gb of additional space!! The partitioning worked great and in fact I'm ripping a DVD to my new j: drive right now. Thanks so much!! You guys are great!! :-)
Karen H.--Dell Optiplex GX240, P4 1.50ghz, 256mb RAM (yeah, I need more), Windows XP Pro w/SP1, 80gb c: drive (replaced the 20gb c: that crashed), 126gb i: drive, 124gb j: drive, 500gb external hard drive partitioned into k: and l: drives, Sony DDU1621/C1 DVD-ROM to rip/encode, Sony DRX-530UL to burn, new Sony DRX-840U to burn DL discs ... need a new computer to go with it!!

Yeah, the extra drive space is always welcome! :)
The Task Manager - Performance utility graphs taught me a lot about different apps. I would advise using it for a while. For instance, burning may take only 20% CPU max, and word processing 5%. Seeing this also gives you an appreciation of how demanding video encoding is with 100% usage. Also, if you do see encoding drop below the 100%, it can be a sign of an over-heating CPU.

Karen I think that cozza1987 is on the right track you probably need a bios upgrade. Systems that were built before the arrival of really large hard disks might not be able to recognize it without an upgrade.

Luckily, Sophocles, it worked without my having to check the BIOS (but if you'd care to give more info on that just for my future reference, that'd be great -- I like to understand the how's and why's of stuff as well as knowing the steps to follow to fix a problem). The only explanation I can think of as to why my computer didn't recognize the whole thing when the techies installed it was that I didn't have Service Pack 1 installed. In any case, following instructions that people gave me in this thread, I was able to partition the unallocated space and get 105gb. Yay!!
Again, thanks to everyone -- it's been nice learning some new stuff about my computer today. :-)

lol i was in bed when u replied b4, it was 3am when i was helping lol
Glad to see you got it working.
I would of said was Doc did :-)
SP1 shouldnt matter, as i have a 200G hdd, and without SP1 even installed it found the full capacity.
When the techies installed obviously they didnt set it 2 the full capacity.
Its good to see people learning computers, not just saying, you do this for me to another person. :D
If you have any problems we would all be glad to help.
Regards
CoZZa
But all that matters is its working fine and dandy :D

Cozza1987, it's 4:39 a.m. my time and I just woke up (yawn). You were the one who started me on the road to getting 105gb more with your suggestions about partitioning so thanks again. I'm glad I didn't need to do anything else although I do love learning new things about my PC.
The techies at my college worked on it for more than an hour without being able to get the PC to "read" the extra 105gb. They're usually great so I don't know why they couldn't figure this out. I was grateful for the extra 125+gb so I didn't give them a hard time (and won't).
Thanks again everyone!! :-)

Are you saying that you're not able to access the new drive letter (partition) that has the 105 GB's?

But the techies at her college couldnt get it working, but she got it working, so she isnt going to give them a hard time about it.

Ahhh, past tense. Makes sense now. Well, it's 6:30 AM my time (Pacific Northwest), and I see my morning tankard of coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

Cozza1987, thanks for translating my English into more understandable English. Could you please come to my classrooms in the first week in case my students get confused. :-)

It all depends on your Processor speed, DVD-ROM speed, RAM, and pagefile (which is on a separate partition) when you rip a movie to your hard drive. NTFS is the best way to go if you are doing anything like that. I read somewhere that you should move your pagefile to a separate partition or hard drive - only have "1" pagefile - never split the pagefile across multiple partitions on the same hard drive. If you can, try and upgrade to 512MB RAM and maybe a faster Processor. I use DVD Shrink to rip my movies and it usually takes about 1/2 hour. I also have 1.81GB of virtua memory (pagefile) on a separate partition which was created using PowerQuest PartitionMagic 8.0 - very simple program to use. Hope that helps.
