I got one of these 2 days ago and so far I'm very impressed with it. It makes very good vhs to dvd recordings (just as good or better than the Panasonic unit I took back) the fact that it can do dvd+dl's is nice. But what really sealed the deal is that it can do divx and xvid-play only-(better than my Philips DVP-642). The only thing that really pisses me off is that there is no svhs input on the back panel. I have to run the svhs output from my vcr into the front inputs behind the drop down front panel which is really dumb. But I guess that if that's the worst thing I can say about it right now I can live with it. I'll keep ya'll informed as I become more framilular with it.

This sounds like a pretty nice machine. Where did you find it? LG also makes its products under the brand names GoVideo, Zenith and Sanyo so the same machine may pop up as those other brands in the future. Unfortunately LG-made products have a bit of a sketchy reliability record but hopefully this new lineup will prove to be solid.

Can you answer a few questions about this one:

- Which Panasonic did you return for this, and how would you compare the playback quality of pre-recorded DVDs between the two machines?

- Does this LG have a cooling fan in it, and if so how noisy is it, and does it stay on all the time?

- Does it have a stereo tuner? (That is, can you hear separation on TV channels, do sounds move from left to right, can you hear sound coming from all the speakers or just the center channel if watching TV in surround mode?) And does it support SAP audio?

- Do you know if it records sound as Dolby Digital or PCM? Or does it vary depending on what speed you're recording at?

- Is there any built-in guide like Gemstar or VCR+?

- Have you made any coasters yet?

- Do the discs play on other DVD players and/or computer DVD drives OK?

I don't remember but I think it was the DMR-ES10, It's gotta fan, don't know but I'll bet it stays on all the time, yeah and it supports sap, AC3 on record, no fricken vcr+ but I don't care cause I don't use it anyway, I've made 4 vhs to dvd transfers and they looked better than the Panny's did, I have 5 dvd players of various brands and the 2 I tried em" on worked without a hitch, I've found from personel experiance that dvd+r's are more backwardly compatible the -r's. Do I recommend this recorder? Hell yes, it does a better job with divx and xvid playback than my Philips DVP642 does.

I haven't had any problems with macrovision "protected" tapes going to dvd. Can't tell you about hacking for region free or PAL & NTSC.

Hello zrdb-

Could you explain how this recorder is able to play DivX and XviD files? Can you just record them to DVD and play, or do they have to be encoded first?

If it will play these, I am there.
I appreciate any details you can give on that feature.

Thanks,
Mike "sixosix"

It works pretty much the same as the DVP-642- most DivX, most XviD (no qpel or gmc), but no overscanning, no vertical bars, it gives a pretty full description of what's being played and it takes about 1/3 the time to load of the time it takes the DVP-642. Pretty damn good DivX player if I say so myself.
