everytime i try to run disk fragmenter i can't. the page freezes up and goes dead. i was told by another forum user that i have a trojan virus and to use regedit but i don't know how to do this. also, when i enter the disk fragmenter screen, the option buttons are just blank/empty squares with no text writing on them. THANKS

Run a virus scan. You may indeed have a virus.

Peacedoff, that's good advice by GrandpaBW; please do the scan; what OS are you running?? Please make sure no applications are running when you attempt your next defrag. Defrag will stop, machine may lockup or freeze if defrag encounters an issue where some app is writing to the hard drive. Try that and let us know.

Also, do a screen shot of task manager and post it so we know what is running in the background while you run the defrag. Also, please tell us exactly how you are launching Defrag?? From Device Manager?

A third party utility called Diskeeper is excellent. Try a trial copy of it.

That's cool. You must be running Windows XP Home or Professional. That is one way to run it from the start program menu and is perfectly fine.

Screen print:

Start your defrag; then, launch task manager; remember to check the show all processes box; then press the PRINT SCREEN key; this should copy the screen contents to the clipboard; then paste it into a Word doc and your next message here at the forum. Give it a try and keep us posted. Also, before running another defrag try running a Scandisk first. Have you tried that yet?? Keep us posted.

Starbuck1 is right, about Diskeeper. I have version 8 and would upgrade to version 9, but funding right now, is not there. Well, it is, if I want to get slapped up the side of the head by my wife. LOL

Windows XP's, defragger is actually the "baby" (lite) version of Diskeeper. It is a good program.

thanks for everyone's input. I ran it and it worked well. I was at 71% fragmented (ouch) before I ran the scan and afterward it is still fragmented though not nearly as much. like 6196 excess fragments left and 13 file fragments. anyone know what else I can do. it still gives me the warning color symbol but not the critical one at least anymore. THANKS also, as far as antivirus programs go, what can i use that will remove trojans without me having to buy the registered version of the antivirus program?

Congrats! Next time run a Scandisk prior to Defrag; highly recommended. And.....
