no, it wouldn't be cool. in fact, i wish there was a fourth or fifth major console system, as that would create more intense competition. competition drives performance up and prices down.

competetion also makes kids like me completly biased and annoying.. and less games per console, and more wants with different games and consoles,, making money pretty much get equal again even if the competeion works

ya thats why I put out that suggestion so that there would be less competion so that we can actually choose which console we want without losing something cool from the other.

competition drives the market. without competition, the consumers lose because the retailers can sell games and consoles for whatever they want, and there's a populace that will complain and resist slightly, but still adapt to taking it up the rear by the retailers. when a consumer doesn't want competition amongst a product's manufacturers, they really are asking to settle for inferior products and service while paying more than they should.
however, if there is competition between the console producers, they'll all be striving to put the best features on their own consoles, creating a wide and good selection of gaming devices.
think of microsoft. MS had no real competition, and while they now make decent products, with 90% market share, they can do whatever the hell they want, charge whatever they want, and give you the finger while you ask nicely to purchase their things. progress is slowed and highway robbery happens to the consumer.

ok now think about this... I always wanted to play PikMin, or what ever that name is for Game Cube. Now i dont have money to buy a game cube, and non of my firends have a game cube,, and this is in a world with some competetion,, if we had more competetion think of how many other games this would happen with. And to have to play those game the money would end up equal to what would happen if we had no competetion.

competition drives prices down and leaves the consumer hopefully at the end of it with a better product, this has always been the way
as Auslander said Microsoft have no real competition and can charge and get away with what they like because no other software company has a big enough grasp on the market at present to challenge them
a 3 way console war is good for gamers, because HOPEFULLY prices will be kept lower than say if there was only sony in the market

couldn't have said it better myself, jpp01uk. liez4love, competition drives prices down. if Sony hadn't been charging $50 a game, MS could have charged 60 or 70 for every game they produced. but to compete in sales with Sony, they had to shoot lower. ya see? and they had to make their console cheaper instead of say, $450, to compete with Sony. ya dig?

You know, it's expected that the next generation of games will cost $60 USD. I remember that not too long ago, new releases were coming out at $40, what the hell happened?
This is exactly what happened 10 years ago. CD-based games were coming, and were said to be the future of gaming, and because of the lower prices of printing a CD, as opposed to having to print mini-boards and cartridges, that prices were supposed to go down..... and they did.
Prices hovered around $30 for a new release back in 1996, and slowly trickled their way up to $40 which was still acceptable. Now most games are costing $50 and sometimes even more.
Here's what I'm saying, that the fact that people are willing to pay for good games is driving up the price. I mean, I love games just as much as anyone else, but I think that the price nowadays is really sticking a fork in people, especially considering that an astounding majority of people only play a game until they've "beaten" it once, then they either trade it in, or tuck it away in a collection.
Not only that, but the price of used games nowadays is ridiculous as well. A lot of the $50 games are being sold used at $45, which is utter crap.
And I know that I'm speaking for more people than myself when I say that if I'm going to buy a game and not care about price, I'll probably be pre-ordering it, but anything else, and I'll either be renting it, or pirating it, unless the game can be picked up at a reasonable price.
Anyways, I foresee a grim time for video game systems in the future. Since prices are going to go up, so is piracy. I know for a fact that I'm not going to buy a PS3 until there's a fully-working, non-dangerous pirating solution to it.
You know, I picked up a used copy of Silpheed for $6 yesterday, original cover, and instruction book included. That made me very happy. I'm going to start a thread on it.

I was talking to my sister x-boy's brother who is in the middle of an internship with Nentendo and he said Sony's been trying to buy out Nentendo for about 2 month! I hope it goes through because i wish some of the Gamecub games were on PS2/PSP/PS3!!!

40 pounds? Screw that... Didn't the UK make modchips illegal? I never quite got what happened with that.
Anyways, yeah, I guess paying 2/3 of what you guys pay is probably better, but still, it's expensive, it's not very "gaming lifestyle"-friendly.

maybe that proves the point of competition in the market
the RRP of the games are 39.99 yet the biggest game store in the uk sells them at 33, if there was no competion it would be 40

no offense, but how does an intern know about management info? especially something that has not been brought out to the press...surely they would have been all over this, or at least the gaming magazines(just curious)

just skimming through and noticed that. are you referring to logik666's siggy pic, ewokjedi? if so (and i'm guessing i'm wrong), no, that's not an alien. that's an image of the ancient Egyption (jackal) god, Anubis.
*edit* slightly OT, but it just occurred to me that the ancient Egyptians were heavily into anthropomorphics. no wonder i like them so much...they were all furries!
