Hi. I have a Onkyo TX-SR 500. For the most part it's great (although I've taken it in to Circuit City TWICE for repairs. grr) But when the receiver switches over to Dolby D mode the center speaker goes VERY quiet, unless I turn the volume up to about 80% and then lower it again. Is this an issue with my center speaker or my receiver.

probably the receiver but you can test it by swapping the center with one of your fronts. Also make sure the channel levels are set correctly when in DD mode.

Most of those systems allow you to adjust the output manually for the different speakers. Its a 6.1 system and should allow you to change the output settings for the centre channel. It could be that it has been set quite low by mistake possibly?

It's kind of odd. It supports DD, but I cannot set it to DD manually. Whenever it detects the signal, then you can see on the monitor of the receiver that it switches over. At that point I cannot mess with settings. And it is a 5.1 system. I've messed with individual channel settings. I'm going to try to convince my friend to bring over his center speaker.

All this time I figured it was normal while watching Lord of the Rings. Then I played Xenosaga Ep. 2 and knew things were wrong when the characters were practically mute in cutscenes.

i have this same problem. And so does my uncle. I have an onkyo (can't remember the model number)but same problem center speaker too quiet while surround speakers are loud. My uncle has a sony that does the same thing too. But when he switches to DTS everything sounds great. Im connected through an optical cable, but i remember using the optical and the lefta and right cables when i first got it and it never usto do that. Im gonna try reconect the left and right chanelles.
