Comby drive won't read dvd's

I have a toshiba satellite with a SD-R2412 comby drive. It reads cd's fine but will not read dvd's. I have tried the usual like update driver and uninstall reinstall but it still does not work.
Is it completely kaput?????

try a cd/dvd cleaner disk
