First, I've searched the forums, many times, and have found no real information on the problems I've experienced. My problem is simple: I can't get DVD backups to work (I have no problems with CD backups). Here's more information on what I've tried:

PS2: Ver1 (no mod) & Ver5 (eject mod)
Boot Method: Swap Magic V3, CSL, HDL/HDA
Media Type: DVD+R & DVD-R
Media Brand: Imation, Generic (CompUSA), esa
Burn Speed: 2x, 4x, 8x
Burn Software: Alcohol, Nero, UISO
PC: 3 Different, all running XP SP2
Burner: BTC IDE1004, NEC ND6500A, Lite-On SOHW-832S, Pioneer
DVR-109
Source: Direct copy from original, burn of iso from original,
burn of iso from download (original owned)

I can use CSL or SM3 to load originals, and I have no problem playing movies on either PS2 burned to the same media with the same burners and software. HDL/HDA say the backups are bad discs. Attempting to load them from PC to [PS2] HDD doesn't work. Loading the iso's from PC to [PS2] HDD does work.

I really don't see what I could be doing wrong. I've followed guides to no avail. This problem is mostly just annoying: I can still install games to my PS2's HDD. It's just annoying to have to remove it every time, and network installs are soooooo slow.

Thanks for any and all help.

well first off you may want to buy some better discs.
Are they Comp USA brand discs, or are they Imation?
Movies will work with just about any media, and will load even on an unmodded system, so you can never judge your discs by the fact that your movies that you have done worked fine. I have done movies on cheap Memorex discs and they worked, but games would not.

Second, what is the eject mod? Is it just a mod that stops the PS2 from resetting when you press eject?
What games have you tried?

Okay, first, the 'eject mod' is modchip that, I believe, does exactly as steimy suggested: stops the ps2 from 'resetting' when the eject button is pressed.

Yes, I'm using the dvd for dvd's, and the cd for cd's (I'm smart enough to use cogswap and hdloader, gimme some credit ;-) ).

Games I've tried... Well, there are a lot. Ones that I can rememeber: Bloodrayne2 (modified (redundant data removed) and unmodified; both from a download source, and from the original); GTA:SA (from download and from original) ; Project:Snowblind; God of War (both sources; yes, I know many people have had problems due to it being dual-layer (I have it installed on my PS2's HDD atm)); Katamari Damacy (both sources); more I can't remember.

The media has been both (all three, actually; Imation, CompUSA, & esa brands).

Lastly, I know the CompUSA and esa discs are mediocre. The imation are decent. And memorex are one of the better (feel free to read reviews; I've used them and personally like them). I also know that just because it plays movies on said discs doesn't really matter. I was only mentioning that to illustrate the point that all hardware/software aside from the PS2 is in working order (no errors, mistakes, etc.).

Thanks for any and all help.

Well, when booting with swap magic, the border turns red ('disc will not work even with patch'); with csl, it just black-screens; and with hdl or hda, they say that it is a bad/damaged disc. And I've not seen any fixes for the particular games that I've tried.

All the disks you have mentioned are garbage. Memorex is cheap CMC magnetics manfucatured in Taiwan. Except Ritek and Verbatim, you should stay away from stuff manufactured in Taiwan. So try some decent media such as Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden's, Sony, Phillips, Ritek, Maxell.

it might be the patches you used.to tell you the truth getting swap magic 3.6 would nelp.but in the meantime try cdloader to play these games.go to http://www.swapmagicfix.com/ and download the vi-6 cdloader.the site gives you instructions on how to put it on a cdr and how to use the program.old versions of swapmagic sometimes need this for newer games.i dont know if you need to patch the games beforehand.there may be some other causes but start here first.you need the cd version of swap magic to load cdloader also.

mrlip: "Yeah, well, you know, that's just like your opinion, man."

nate_09: I don't see how that can help with PS2 games. I have many other programs that do the same.

sui-cyco: I've always checked swapmagicfix. There hasn't been a patch or workaround for any of the games I've tried. I've also tried cdloader (forgot to mention that when I mentioned cogswaploader; both of which I load from memory card). I will try some older games in a little while (Eternal Ring, Devil May Cry, Ace Combay 04) and updating my loaders (if I can find newer versions). Thanks for your input and help.

Not my opinion mate that they are manufactured by CMC magnetics mate. Am trying to help and I am suggesting that you should try higher quality media. That media is 3rd grade media. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm See for yourself on that link. And run those Memorex through DVD identifier and you shall see they either carry a CMC media ID or a Moseur Basur media ID. Both of which are bad. My suggesting being, which is my opinion, is that you try higher quality disks.

100% correct, Memorex are cheap-o crap. for movies they may work fine, but for games you should really look into getting better media as mentioned above. And if you had read any of the media guides on the net you would know that Memorex is no good.
