About 4 months ago the dvd rom that came with my computer refused to read dvd's. It also stopped acknowledging that there was a dvd in the drive. I went to an store and bought a sony ddu1622 and everything returned to normal, now the sony is doing the same thing, not reading dvd's it does not show that there is a dvd in the drive and when i placed a dvd in the drive it asks for a dvd to be placed in the drive even though one is already there. However, the sony dvd rom does reads cd's. When i troubleshoot the device in "my computer" it says that the device is working properly. When i placed a dvd in the drive it does nothing but makes a noise as if it is trying to read it, but that's about it. I will appreciate any technical input about this problem.

First give this a try...
Go into your device manager and delete all your IDE controllers and then any CD/DVD drives.. Then reboot your computer and let windows install everything see if that solves anything?

Let me know?

I did that and nothing happened, in fact the drive is acting erratic, sometimes appears as a cd drive and other times in my computer it appears as dvd drive, sometimes it acknowledges that there is a dvd in the drive and other times it does not. Sometimes it plays just the beginning of a movie then stops and other times it does absolutely nothing. I am beginning to believe that the drive is shot and is time to replace it, what bothers me is that it is a fairly new driver around 4 to 6 months old. I don't know what else to do so i think that i am going to replace it.

Thanks for your input, if there is anything else that could help me i am all ears. Thanks...

Good question by ddp ^^

Also you may want to try replacing the IDE cable and switching the power connector into your drive with another one. If you can test the drive in another system.

Let us know how it is going.. :-)

Try going into device manager and deleting all your IDE controllers then restart the computer and XP should detect and install all your drives..

Let me know if that works?

Cheers
