Hey,I have been using DVD Shrink, Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator, DVD X Copy Platinum, and DVD Decrypter(RIP)for a while now, and have had great luck with it, especially with speed. Last week I formatted my computer and went from Windows XP Home, to Windows XP Pro. Before I formatted, it would take me around 15 min to go through the full process (Analizing, Encoding, Burning), now it takes around two and a half hours. If anyone has anything to add, or help me, please do so.

Thanks

Check your DMA settings first. Make sure your IDE busses have not set themselves back to PIO.

Have you tried removing and reinstalling your drives? Your DVD applications?

Alright, just checked my DMA settings. On my secondary IDE channel, Device 1 will not change back to DMA. I have changed it and hit ok, then rebooted, and it still says that the current transfer mode is PIO. If you have any more suggestions, please help. My DVD apps, what do you mean?

Thanks

Try going into device manager, select and disable the drive in question, reboot and let windows reenable. If that doesn't work go back into device manager select the IDE channel that the problematic drive is on, disable and reboot, let windows reenable. Check that DMA for that drive is enabled.

We really need to isolate the problem. Is it slow during the analyzing/encoding process or burning process?

@gfxbss,

Verbatim is a good media - it's one of the top blank quality in the market now-a-days. Are you using the net (i.e surfing, browsing) or doing something else with other programs on your computer, or do you have any other application open/running while you're backing up your dvd? Usually, it's the DMA issue, but if your DMA is back to "on/available", then I have no clue why it took you 2 hours to back up a single movie. The only possibility I can think of is your dvd rom and dvd burner's speed is locked to read and write at certain speed only. Have you tried to updated any of your dvd rom or dvd burner's firmware? Perhaps, you should try to uninstall all your burning softwares and re-install everything back, then try to back up again and see what's the result.

The reason I said this is, it's obvious that with your computer's specs on your signature [Sony PCV-RS430G, 2.8Ghz P4 w/ HT Tech, 1Gb DDR PC2400 RAM, 120GB Maxtor Internal HD, 250GB Wester Digital External HD, ATI Radeon 9800 256MB All In Wonder Pro], it shouldn't take you that long to encode/compress and back up. Look at my signature, my computer specs are slightly lower than yours, however, I can decrypted a dvd movie using DVD Decrypter at around 10 - 15 mins (depending on how long is the movie), encode "full disc" movie back up with DVD Shrink from 20 - 23 mins (depending on the movie), and back up with DVD Decrypter at 7 - 8 mins (at 8X using FUJI DVD+R). Overall, it took me "46 mins [15 + 23 + 8 = 46]" to successfully backed up "Coach Carter". Hopefully someone will be able to solve your problem soon.

No i have nothing else running with it accept for my AIM. which i regularly run while burning dvds(even before i formatted). there are no firmware updates with either drive, im not sure why they would be locked into certain speeds, but i will check it just to make sure. it used to only take me 15-20 min to fully complete a analysis, encoding, and burn. this is a huge upgrade because i am now using a superdrive, compared to the 4x dvd burner i originally had. Ive been wanting to see coach carter, good movie?

thanks

@gfxbss,

I recommend you "not" to run AIM or any other programs while backing up movie. This sometimes can cause your backed up copy to freeze or sort of jerky when play on stand alone dvd player. What kind of dvd burner do you have? Yeah... with your specs, it should only be 20 mins max on analysis or encoding with DVD Shrink. That's how long it takes me to encode with Shrink in prior to back up with DVD Decrypter.

In addendum to your question about Coach Carter, it's a good movie in my opinion. It teaches kids and teenagers about the value and passion about Basketball, not only that, but it also educated kids on how important is education and school as well. Search and google for any firmware upgrade for your dvd burner if you can. Well, I hope you get things straight out soon.

@gfxbss,

Or you can search for dvd burner here to see if there is any new firmware updated available. http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php - it won't hurt to do so, but if you can I would recommend updated it from its manufacture's site instead.

@gfxbss -

just in case your DMA needs a slightly bigger nudge (be very careful with regedit) -
Quote:
Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.

Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.

Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA)

Check the quality settings in DVD Shrink. If you have deep analysis and compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation max smooth or max sharp checked then your backup times are not out of line even for your pc specs. If all you care about is speed and not quality uncheck everything in quality settings. Personally I prefer quality and could care less about speed. Then again thats why I use RB/CCE.

I have a Sony DRU-720A. The specs on it are DVD+R DL 4x (8.5GB), DVD+R 16x, DVD-R 16x, DVD+RW 8x, DVD-RW 6x.

@ Mort

I dont have either checked. I wish I could say I did. That would make this all a whole lot easier. I perfer quality next to speed as well, but I dont have alot of time to burn so that is why I go with them off. What exactly is RB/CCE? Im not familar with it. Is it hard to use? How much does it cost, and where can I get it?

@gfxbss,

Not a problem at all, this is why we're all here to help out one another. I guess the more I/you come in here, the more we'll learn as day goes by. So did you solved your problem yet? Yes or No... and is both of your DMA back on "available" on both Primary and Secondary channels?

Why don't you post[copy and paste it in here] the long but successful backed up log from either DVD Decrypter or Nero, if you have them. I strongly deem that "Mr. Creaky and Mort81", and other members in here are pretty much knowledgeable and they might be able to resolve it for you by looking at the history log file. In addition to the previous issue you had, why don't you "uninstall or get rid" of ROXIO Easy CD/DVD Creator? This program sometimes conflicts with others while you're performing a back up. With that being said; put the program [ROXIO] on a cd and save it, thus, whenever you feel like using it, then just pop it back in your drive and install it back on.

RB/CCE stands for DVDRebuilder/Cinema Craft Encoder Basic. DVDRB is free but CCE Basic costs $58. It is the best encoder under $2000 (CCE SP) and uses the same encoding engine as it's parent CCE SP just doesn't have all the bells and whisles. It is a little harder to set up than most the first time but after that is very simple to use. It is one of the slowest hence slow = quality. It takes me about 2 hrs to encode a 7 gb video folder then you will need a burning rom to burn the encoded folder. I use Nero. There is an installer if you are interested which greatly simplifies installation. Let me know if you are interested and I'll dig up the link to the installer.
