As a test I encoded the same video folder (already ripped to my hdd and edited with dvdrm). The folder was 7.06 gb and here are the three apps I used and time required.
1) RB/CCE Basic (best encoder under $2000 and probably slowest) 123 min.
2) DVD Shrink (deep analysis and compress video with high quality error compensation sharp checked) 97 min.
3) Intervideo DVDCopy3 (one of the fastest and second only to RB/CCE INHO) 20 min flat.
None of the times above include burning as I saved all to my hdd.

Mort81 I was wondering if you used any filters with CCE during your test. I find adding filters will slow down the encoding process. Without filters Basic can get it done in about 90-100 minutes. With Deen and Undot it's around 120-130 minutes

I don't use any filters as haven't really had the need to. Thought about trying some but then decided against it since the final results have been practically indestinguishable (sp?) from the original on my 52" big screen.

hi mort
in·dis·tin·guish·a·ble ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nd-stnggw-sh-bl)
adj.
Not distinguishable, especially:
Impossible to differentiate or tell apart: indistinguishable twins; markings that make a moth indistinguishable from its background.
Impossible to discern; imperceptible: a sound that was indistinguishable to the human ear.
Difficult to understand or make out; vague: indistinguishable speech.
hehe...just a lil help from the spelling bee :P you saved me last time, so, here ya go~ :)
i have Intervideo DVDCOPY3, is it THAT good in terms of quality? i've used it ONCE, but, it is still installed on my comp and i paid for it back in the day, would you recommend DVDCOPY3 over shrink? as much as i read about RB/CCE basic, i never took the time to buy it or even try it...im SURE it's THE best for quality, but, i like my backups done fairly quickly as i have many to do...let me know buddy...

Hi k666,
Thanks for saving my spelling arse although I ALREADY KNEW what it meant :) and only missed one little letter. You smarty. hehe
Yes I really think DVDCopy3 is 2nd best to only RB/CCE and blows shrink away. I used to use DVD Shrink set at no compression to rip some dvd's to my hdd prior to editing w/ dvdrm and encoding w/ RB/CCE but noticed the background on some scenes out of sync and jiggly. I isolated the problem to useing shrink as the ripper and all problems went away when I started useng dvdd exclusively as my ripper. If there are problems with it set at no compression then they will of course still be there when compression is required. I don't use DVD Shrink at all anymore. It's a great proggy for the price but doesn't hold up to some other retail apps IMO. Just my 2 cents and I don't mean to offend anyone.

Hey kiv,
There are some advantages that shrink has over copy3. Shrink has a lot more versatility in reauthor mode than copy3. Copy3 you can only either copy the whole disc or movie only. Thats why I use dvdrm to edit my video folder prior to encoding. If you want to adjust the burn speed w/ copy3 you will need to save the encoded file to a premade folder on your hdd and then burn it with Nero otherwise it will burn at max.
DVDCopy3 doesn't have the features of DVD Shrink but the video quality is superior imo.
You can remove unwanted audio tracks and subpictures but you have to do it to each TS individually.

ok, thanks for that clarification mort, i will try a "Test Run" when i get home...i naturally want a GOOD compromise between fairly HIGH quality video and speed of burn, while i can see that shrink does a decent job for video and audio with many features at my disposal, if the video quality is better using dvdcopy3, then i will switch~ im content to say the very least using shrink for so long, but, if something better comes along that is not too complicated for me to figure out (which i think RE/CCE is too much for me at this point) then i will go with the flow~ :P have a good one, ive learned something new today, time to actually "get back to work"

I've found that using filters on RB/CCE does increase the transcode time. A movie that starts about 8GB I can do (with filters) in approx. 3 hrs. Using 2.2GHz Athlon 64 3400+ CPU and 1GB RAM @ 400MHz.
