Well I've been using it and I would say safety is hard to come by;

for one thing, you have to enter your email addy to even get it working, to create an account, so I just put it my hotmail addy.

But other than that its really quite good, I've been sharing directly to and chatting with people all over the world today!

Ive yet to set it up as I just downloaded it this afternoon when I read this thread. I assume the speeds would be dependent on your ISP connection (upload speed, et al) and perhaps the network congestion. P'raps as fast as bit torrent speeds?
