Quick question about swap magic, does it work exactly the same as a mod chip, and is the flip top lid just for easy access to the dvd or is it a neccesity?

Are their any plus / drawbacks to having a swap magic as opposed to a mod chip?

Also does anyone have a good site for ordering swap magic / flip lid in the US. (non UK site)

Thanks

Edit: Does swap magic not play all games? Do I need a slide card with this or just the disks?

have you got a slim or normal ps2

i have swap magic and its wicked basically its so much easier than a modchip you just swap the discs and play as for the fliptop you dont have to have 1 as you can use a slidecard to pull the drive out check this site out 4 info

You can buy a premodded one, with either a DMS4 Pro, Matrix Infinity, or DMS4 lite,(in my opinion,"the best ones"). Ill find a site and post it up.

Basically Swap Magic works like a boot disk. You boot up your PS2 with the Swap Magic disk and it'll prompt you to insert a disk. You then use the slide card to push the laser assembly up and pull the tray out (takes a few tries to get the feel for it), put in the backup, push the tray back in, slide the laser assembly back down (again takes a few tries to get the feel, but you'll feel it hook on) press X and enjoy.

The flip top is just for convenience. It negates the need for using the slide card. You simply flip open the PS2 much like you would have back in the PS1 days.

As far as playing all games, it's not usually the Swap Magic's fault for not playing a game, its the ripping/burning process on some games. Game publishers are making it more and more difficult to backup games, so the smart guys on this forum spend countless hours making sure we have work arounds.

As far as drawbacks of the swap magic. If used with a slide card, I've read and seen evidence that in time, the sliding of the laser assembly over and over will lead to premature laser misalignment or even death. You'll eventually start seeing the "Disk Load Error" screens. In my opinion, its easier to leave the laser alone and go for the flip top option. Either way, you'll still need the Swap Magic disks.

check out swapnslide.com, they are pretty cheap and deliver fast. Also, if you use the older ps2 model (non slim) it will save you from buying and installing the fliptop which will save you about $20-$30. It's all about what you prefer, there are there are pros to going either way.

Thanx a ton. I dont have the option to buy a premodded ps2 because the money im using is an online gift cert. for ebgames.com

The swap magic with the flip top sounds perfect.

1 more thing, does the swap magic version change depending on the PS2 version you get? Or is the newest swap magic the one to get no matter what.

After a closer look at ebgames selection it looks like if I want a new one it will be a slim PS2 so thats what im getting.

Yea everything is ok. Use Swap Magic and everything will work fine. But I heard the laser on the ps2 slimline is weaker than the fat ps2.
