I've been burning TDK single-sided DVD-R discs in a Go.Video VR3845 (VCR/DVD combo). Playback on this machine works fine as does playback on a Dell Latitude X300 laptop PC running Windows XP Pro, using a QSI CDRW/DVD (model no. SBW24U).

However, when the same disc is loaded on my desktop PC (Dell 8240, also running Windows XP Pro), equipped with a Phillips internal DVD+-RW (model no. DVD8631), it won't play; all that shows is the title frame. The same thing happens with different player software (Windows Media Player or PowerDVD). Does anyone have a clue as to how to remedy this problem?

I did some checking on your drive and it seems to one of those picky drives as to media. Try a firmware update first if you haven't already. About 50% of the comments are about burn problems with that drive. Here is the link if you want to read up on it.

I did the firmware update before I posted the thread. The latest update appears to be GD30 (June 2005). Before doing the firmware update I couldn't even get the drive to recognize that there was a DVD in it. After the firmware update it recognized that there was a DVD there and displayed the title frame but doesn't play.

I also tried LG DVD-RW media and got the same result. Let me know if you have any further thoughts. Thanks for the quick reply.

Hello cclbl2002,

When did you purchase your Dell ?

No I will not go into details about the Philips DVD8631 but there was a batch of drives that was pure garbage.

I bought my Dimension 8400 in January 2005 and I had one of those bad drives.

Just like that, with what you said, I have a feeling you have one of those drives.

You having several issues with it ?

Search the forums, I think there was 2 threads for this drive, and there was tons and tons of posting on it.

If it's still under warranty, get Dell to replace it.
Seems the new batch of Philips DVD8631 seems to be ok, but we all asks to get it replaced with an NEC.

Good luck !

Thanks for the advice. I finally tried Verbatin DVD -R discs and these seem to work OK.
