You will need to set one up as a "master" & one as a "slave" so you can run them tougher. If you?re using normal ata all you need to do is connect the other hdd to the ide cable, you will need to remove one of the headers on the hdd to set it as a slave. As for sata I would think it was the same except with sata cables. I would assume that the WD hdd has the OS on it so set the Maxtor as the slave so you won't have to put a OS on it.

Also don?t write in all caps folk will think you?re shouting :)

aye aye man

SATA drives don't have master and slave. Each drive has it's own cable. Each SATA controller generally will handle 2 drives, but there's a connector for each one.

I've got a similar question. I just replaced my last pc:
Athlon barton 3000+/80 gig hitachi 133-ata-ide/maxtor 200 gig-133-ata/blown 500 w power supply with the hp package in my sig. That pc blew 2 powersupplies in 2 days and 1 gig of pc2700 ram and I got tired of working on it.

I know the 200 gig maxtor hd is still ok,and want to add it to my hp system so I can keep my dvd backups/pictures/ and other misc stuff on it and far away from my seagate hd containing my os.

My primary ide cable on the HP has only 2 ends. I also have the round/80 pin cables from my old pc to replace these flat ide cables.

There are about 20 dvd's stored on that maxtor and no os-nothing important.

This HP also has only a 275 watt powersupply.I already added my lite-on 167-t dvd rom.I also want to install the sony floppy drive later on down the road. Upgrading to the antec 450 w or 500 w is no problem,if needed-but I am guessing it will.

I was just wanting a few tips for my project because that maxtor hd is just sitting around and I have nothing to do tomorrow!. I still have the driver cd from that maxtor. I am familiar with the jumpers, having taking apart that barton pc a zillion times.ddp can testify to that, LOL. I'll get that one fixed up later this winter.

Hey ddp, I've got one 120 mm fan in the back and the basic 80 mm on the heatsink.

After looking at the powersupply again, it's only 250 watts. My mistake. It's got the same connectors as the last 3 ps's I replaced in my old system.3 ps's in less than 6 months!

The only info I could find so far is an Asustek salmon, according to nero's info tool. I'll further investigate it and find actual mobo #.

I did a quick google search for my HP a1118x-b and it only came up with a thread from afterdawn in which it had some of my replies last march, pretty funny aye?LOL.

ddp, I just replaced the ps with an antec 400 watt. Replaced the primary ide ribbon with the round cable and inserted my old 200 gig maxtor and all looks ok for now. My manual said to set it to cable select. Looks like that is what the primary is set to,but I can't get a good look at it. The maxtor is g-drive and all my movies and other stuff are still there.

A thunderstorm is coming through right now, remnants of the last hurricane. I'll further search my seagate settings at their site. This pc didn't come with a whole lot of info, and no windows xp boot disc.

Thanks for the tip on the connectors. This asus mobo is a lot different, and tighter than my last asrock mobo. Have a great weekend buddy.

Last time, Huge ice storm. Our area was declared an emergency.24 inches of snow just before that on christmas eve. That's more snow than we have had in the last 2 or 3 winters combined. Most people lost power for 2-7 days in early january, down here in west central ohio. Our small town only had a series of brown-outs for about a minute.By the time I got the pc turned off,it was too late.

That pc wasn't right off the git-go when I bought it in september 04.No warranty/jno support.I called once, but they were a bunch of mexicans and I couldn't understand a word they said, LOL. It was running better just before the ice storm, but only about 90%. I did replace that hp 250 watt ps in that other pc.I'm only leaving the benq 1620-or original khypermedia +8x burner, original 80 gig hitachi hd,and the last 512 mb pc 2700 stick that I have.

This new hp lightscribe burner isn't impressing me yet. That benq may be swapped out with it, LOL
